Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At the beginning of the episode, Sawyer, Jin and Michael encounter a group to whom Jin refers as the "Others". The leader proceeds to knock all three unconscious. Who is the first to be hit?

Answer: Sawyer

After reaching shore and reuniting with Jin (who appeared to have been taken captive) Sawyer and Michael realized they were not alone. The "Others" approached carrying crude weapons, and a very lean-looking man (who is in fact Nigerian, which may or may not suggest his affiliation with the drug-smuggling beech craft from Nigeria that resulted in Boone's death) attacked them with a stick. Sawyer stood and attempted to strike but was hit first, followed by Michael and then Jin. All three were hauled off by a group of four to a mud pit in the ground, which served as a holding pen.
2. In Locke's flashback, it is revealed that he attended a group anger management/therapy session (headed by Helen). The first woman to speak complains about money which was stolen by her mother, which agitates Locke. What was the woman's name?

Answer: Francine

Locke becomes increasingly irritated and angered by Francine's complaints, and once again shows the side of his personality which is easily frustrated. He speaks (for the first time in a month, according to Helen) about his birth mother's cruel lies and the way in which his father took his kidney.

After the meeting, Locke and Helen met up and later began dating. It has been confirmed, however, that this was the not the same Helen with whom Locke spoke on the phone-- as a customer-- in an earlier episode, "Walkabout". (This makes the matter a bit more curious- perhaps Locke had appointed the name to a woman he didn't even know?) It is also learned that Locke had visited the Cooper residence to wait for answers from his father every day after the incident for quite some time.
3. Kate's bullet blew out the computer's power transformer.

Answer: False

While Jack and Desmond stood at a stand off, Kate managed to attack Desmond from behind. It was Desmond's bullet (not Kate's) which he accidentally fired on the way down which blew out the power transformer on the vital computer. Desmond claimed to have arrived on the island three years ago during his solo race around the world after crashing on to a reef. (This is similar to Danielle Rousseau's claim that her team's ship hit rocks and became stranded.) Also notable is the fact that Danielle's research team had six members, and there were supposedly 6 stations as part of the "Dharma Initiative". Desmond's story about meeting Kelvin and "saving the world" remains quite sketchy, but Desmond insisted that the "orientation film" would explain.
4. In the hatch, Desmond directs Locke and Jack to watch the "orientation" film for the Dharma Initiative. Dr. Marvin Candle, the narrator, uses which word to refer to the sequence of numbers which must be entered into the computer?

Answer: Code

A very interesting observation: Notice that Dr. Candle's left arm appears to be a prosthetic, and it does not move at all throughout the film. This is especially curious because of other instances of prosthetic limbs (such as the man Kate stayed with in Australia, who eventually turned her in). Also recall from the first part of "Exodus" in season one, when in the jungle Danielle told the group of the Dark Territory, "This is where it all began - where my team got infected - where Montand lost his arm".

A number of conclusions may be drawn to suggest a relation of some degree between the "sickness", the "Others", and the experiment within the hatch. One theory relating the numbers to their numerical place in the alphabet suggests that they spell out the word "DHARMA".
5. A logo identical to the octagonal "Dharma" logo (which appeared in the hatch compound) also appeared on the shark from the previous episode, "Adrift".

Answer: False

The black and white octagon which serves as the logo is based upon the Chinese "ba-gua" (which symbolizes good luck). The swan figure in the center replaces the original symbol on the logo found throughout the hatch and on the film (made to represent the particular station). Chinese symbols have made various appearances throughout other episodes as well, such as on Boone's shirt and Claire's necklace. The Dharma symbol, however, seems to have appeared in previous episodes as well. One example is from season one, "Special", in where the logo seems to be etched into a piece of the fuselage that Walt is leaning against by a campfire. In "Walkabout", Walt is seen standing near the fuselage. To the far right, the top quarter of the faded edges of the ba gua appear on the wreckage. This can be viewed at:

It is unclear if the "Swan" is a code name or perhaps an acronym.
Perhaps the most bizarre appearance of the logo is from the previous episode, "Adrift", in which the ba-gua appears on the tail of the shark which attacks the raft! (Notice, however, that the swan is not in the center but rather a horizontal bar, which suggests that the shark may be part of another of the six stations.) Black and white references have also been very numerous throughout the episodes.
6. At the conclusion of the film, Dr. Candle uses which Sanskrit word after thanking the participants and before wishing them "good luck"?

Answer: Namaste

Dr. Candle, visibly of Asian descent himself, uses the Indian greeting "Namaste". The word is in Sanskrit, an Indo-Aryan language and the official language of India, and literally means "I humbly bow to you". It would be commonly translated as hello or goodbye in English.
According to the film, the creators of the "Dharma Initiative" were Gerald and Karen Degroot (both of whom bear a resemblance to the "Others" who kidnapped Walt). The project was backed financially by "reclusive Danish industrialist" Alvar Hanso (hence, the Hanso Foundation). The film was dated 1980, and was most likely the time at which the compound within the hatch was placed.
One theory suggests a connection between the founders and "Adam and Eve", the bodies found in the caves with one black and one white stone.
A site for the Hanso Foundation (www.thehansofoundation.org) lists what may possibly be the six "stations", and also features this quote: "From the dawn of our species, Man has been blessed with curiosity. Our most precious gift, without exception, is the desire to know more - to look beyond what is accepted as the truth and to imagine what is possible."
7. According to the film, the purpose of the facility was to allow scientists from worldwide to research a wide variety of sciences. Which of the following was the fourth to be named in the sequence?

Answer: Zoology

Among those listed were (in order): meteorology, psychology, parapsychology, zoology, electromagnetism and utopian social--? (At this point there was a glitch in the film, one among many, which may or may not appear coincidentally and force some vital information to be assumed.) Also note that "zoology" is not only number four in the list but is spoken as a voice over-- on a scene of two polar bears fighting. Station 3, the Swan, was allegedly originally designed for research on "unique electromagnetic fluctuations" from the island. Dr. Candle's use of "originally" suggests that a new, different purpose is currently in place since the "incident"-- the pushing of the button every 108 minutes.
Also, the original stay of the partners (which Desmond claims to have been recruited later) was 540 days. 108 multiplied by 5 equals 540.
Also note that a building appearing in the film is in fact a city hall building located in Narvik in Norway. The shadowed shape in front of the building is actually that of a figure over a fountain (which is shaped as an octagon, just like the Dharma logo).
8. To whom was this spoken in the episode? "...Because that would be impossible."

Answer: Jack

This was unusually out of character of Locke to claim an event impossible (especially under the circumstances). After Desmond seemed to recognize Jack, Locke noticed that Jack was upset and stated that Desmond's recognition was impossible. After viewing the film, Locke told Jack that they would need to watch it again (suggesting to the viewers that there was more to see beyond the surface). Jack refused and told Desmond that the entire concept could be merely a mind game, an experiment.

This reflects the film's reference to psychologist B. F. Skinner, upon which the foundation was created and whose experiments involved "operant conditioning".

In one experiment rats were positively reinforced to repetitively press a lever attached to a food dispenser, and even learned to time the frequencies of the pushes-- sounds remarkably like the basis of a human psychology experiment.
9. How many survivors are in the hatch when the time is seen at "5:00" remaining?

Answer: 4

At this point, Desmond had abandoned the compound in a panic over the destroyed computer and was followed by Jack into the jungle. Locke and Sayid remained inside working feverishly to repair the system in time to press the button. Kate and Hurley are also present, with Hurley arguing adamantly against using the numbers.

When the timer hits 4:00 the alarm begins to sound and grows more insistent. Whether a real or imaginary threat waited at the 0:00, the survivors reached a new level of connection to the island when the "Execute" button was pressed at 0:01.
10. Upon his encounter with Desmond in the jungle, Jack asks "Why are you _________?"

Answer: running

Jack told Desmond that Desmond did not even know what he was running from, and Desmond realized that he did indeed remember Jack-- from running in Los Angeles. Jack insistently ignored Desmond's questions about what happened to the girl until he broke down and revealed he had married her. Desmond deduced that Jack was no longer married, and once again departed with his mysterious farewell, "See you in another life, yeah?" Whether Desmond was a part of the "Others", or with Danielle Rousseau, or where he intended to flee to (it is an island, after all) remained unknown. Jack returned to the hatch as the new "replacement", the forbidding numbers were entered, and the timer reset-- the experiment had begun.
