Ruth Malcomson. Ruth was Miss America 1924 from Pennsylvania.
6. The Miss Americas who won from California are Fay Lanphier (1925), Rosemary LaPlanche 1941), Jean Bartel (1943), Marilyn Buferd (1946), actress Lee Meriwether (1955), and Debra Maffett (1983).
Fay Lanphier. She was the winner in 1925 from Oakland, California. She died in 1959 of pneumonia at the age of 53.

1950. The pageant was held in 1950, but winner Yolande Betbeze was considered to be Miss America 1951.
2. Mary Campbell of Ohio was the first in 1922. She won again the next year. The second was Marian Bergeron in 1933. She won from Connecticut. The rules of the Miss America pageant now say that contestants have to be at least 18 years or older to enter.
Hawaii. Angela Baraquio is the second Miss America from Hawaii. The first was Carolyn Sapp in 1992.
1921. The first Miss America was 16 year old Margaret Gorman of Washington, DC.
District of Columbia. Margaret Gorman competed in a beauty contest in 1921, in Atlantic City. Near the end of her reign, they decided to name the young beauty, Miss America.
Alabama. Heather Whitestone is a native of Birmingham, Alabama. She was our first hearing impaired Miss America. In 2000, Heather had surgery to her ears, which enable her to hear her son and husband's voice. She is actively involved in charities for hearing impaired children and adults.
Laurel Schaefer. Laurel Schaefer was crowned Miss America in 1972 and is from Ohio. Phyllis George was crowned Miss America in 1971. Terry Meeuwsen was crowned Miss America in 1973. Susan Powell was crowned Miss America in 1981.
Bess Myerson. Bess Myerson was crowned Miss America in 1945 and was from New York City, New York.
Michigan. Kaye Lani Rae Rafko came from Monroe, Michigan.
1984. Vanessa Williams resigned from her position after appearing nude in "Playboy." She was the first African-American woman to be crowned Miss America.
North Carolina. Maria was a Rockette before she became Miss America 1962, and is from the town of Asheville, North Carolina.

Angela Perez-Baraquio. Angela Perez-Baraquio was crowned Miss America in 2001. She is married to Tinifuloa Grey.
Joan Crawford. Deborah Bryant of Kansas was selected as Miss America 1966. Other celebrity judges have included Grace Kelly, Peggy Fleming, and Dr. Joyce Brothers.
She conducted the Miss America orchestra. She was Miss Oklahoma, and won by conducting the orchestra. The other three talents have all actually been talents performed at the national and/or state level. Animal acts were banned after a horse barely missed falling into the orchestra pit!
Her grandmother's lace tablecloth. Elizabeth Ward Gracen went on to star in the "Highlander" series on TV. She also admitted she had slept with Bill Clinton while he was governor of Arkansas.
Caring for the terminally ill. After her reign, it became mandatory for each contestant to have a "platform" or "critical issue". Heather French's platform was homeless veterans, Nicole Johnson's platform was diabetes awareness, and Ericka Dunlap's was Celebrating Diversity and Inclusion.
Iowa. Her name was Cheryl Brown, and she was the first black contestant. The first black contestant to make the Top 10 was Lencola Sullivan, Miss Arkansas 1980. In 1984, Vanessa Williams became the first black Miss America.
Yolande Betbeze. Catalina Swimwear then began the Miss USA pageant. This pageant is considered more of a "beauty" pageant. There is no talent portion of competition.
Win the pageant two years in a row. After Miss Campbell won two years in a row, the rules were changed that a contestant could only win once. This holds true to this day.
Washington, DC. When the pageant first started in 1921, the contestants represented cities rather than states. Miss Gorman won a prize of $100!
