Bone marrow disease. He was 62 years old when he passed away from pneumonia, a complication of his bone marrow disease. He died at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle. He had received a bone marrow transplant there in April of 1995. The official name of his bone marrow disease was Myelodysplasia. Myelodysplasia is a form of anemia also called Pre-leukemia Syndrome.

Carl Sagan Memorial Station. The announcement was made on July 4, 1997 by NASA administrator Dan Goldin.
