Port Adelaide and Carlton. A great season for Port Adelaide but under-achieved in the finals only reaching the Preliminary Final, while Carlton didn't have a lot of big name players and finished a fair bit below the next highest team, St Kilda.

9 points and Nathan Buckley. A fantastic game in awful conditions, the final score was 10.15.75 to 9.12.66 in favour of Brisbane and quite rightly Nathan Buckley deserved the medal after leading the team well.
False. He did get the goal of the year but his team mate Jonathon Brown received the mark of the year.

75. David Neitz had a great year for the Demons, kicking a lot of goals in some matches but his team lost to Adelaide in the Qualifying Final by 12 points and were eliminated.
Nick Riewoldt. A fantastic year for Nick, who was the only shining light in a very disappointing year for the Saints.

TV Commentators. The commentators do a fantastic job to call the match but also to pick the best out of each match. Paul Williams was a very worthy winner this year on 77 points edging out Brownlow Medallist Simon Black on 74 points.
Josh Francou. It went down to the final vote, all players had a fantastic year but all top five scorers were consistent midfielders and were probably the best player in each club.

Port Adelaide. The Power finished well within the top 8 for the previous 3 years coming 5th, 3rd and 1st. This year they lost their ‘choker’ tag by realising their potential in the finals series, ending up with a premiership. The order of the Top 8 teams were; Port Adelaide, Brisbane, St Kilda, Geelong, Melbourne, Sydney, West Coast and Essendon.

Hawthorn and Richmond. These two teams did not have a good year, easily losing more matches then they won. Both teams had a poor team list that lacked depth and it didn’t help when they both lost their captains for an extended period of time due to injury. Both coaches were sacked during the season, leaving the new coaches with a large task to resurrect the team’s performance in the following years.
Jared Rivers. The Rising Star is awarded to a young player who is in their first year on the Senior List, one nomination is made each week for a Rising Star and at the end of the year, a panel of judges vote on who they believe is the best young player in a 5, 4 , 3, 2, 1 system. These four young players figured prominently in the votes. Rivers, the young, lanky Melbourne defender polled a maximum 45 votes, showing he has a strong future with the club.

Collingwood Magpies . Eddie MacGuire is a highly respected Channel Nine commentator, club president and TV host. He ensured that the Collingwood club had the most support of any club in the AFL and also made sure that it is the most hated by others! Whilst commentating in the Collingwood v Brisbane match he let some of his Irish temper overcome him and questioned the decisions a debutant goal umpire made in relation to the game.
Adam McPhee. Adam McPhee thoroughly deserved this recognition with a consistent and committed performance towards the team in 2004. The bleach-haired youngster showed he was more than a pretty face during the year, time after time putting his body on the line for the team. He may not have the ball skills of a James Hird but he lifts the teams morale with his attack on the football each week.

Southport. Yes, believe it or not, Nick Riewoldt was recruited from a club based in Queensland. Growing up in a rugby league dominated state hasn’t stopped the young wonderkid from fulfilling his dreams in becoming a star AFL player. Being awarded with the best and fairest award will be the first of many accolades coming Nick’s way. The forward-line player topped the marking statistics this year in the AFL and was second behind Fraser Gehrig in St Kilda’s goal kicking list.

Sydney. Peter Rohde was sacked halfway into the 2004 season due to the poor performances on the field by the Bulldogs. Unfortunately, the Bulldogs have arguably been the disappointing team since 2000. Their young list has failed to make any impact on the ladder, regularly finishing in the bottom 5 teams. Hopefully, Rodney Eade can give the struggling club some life and see their status rise in the AFL ranks.

Bob Skilton Medal. Bob Skilton was a Swans club legend, winning the most Brownlow medals for anyone playing at the club. He has been a fantastic ambassador to the Sydney based club, where he regularly attends the games and club functions. The recipient of the medal in 2004 was Barry Hall after he played a dominant role, kicking the most goals for the club and was an instrumental part of the Swans charge towards the finals.

Donald McDonald. The former assistant coach at the club was forced to take over the reins at the struggling club after the prolonged stay of Peter Schwab. Peter was unable to live up to his bold statement, mentioning that his club would win the premiership in 2004. McDonald did not have any previous AFL coaching experience, but he did play 155 games for North Melbourne, where he kicked 165 goals as a ruckman and forward line player.

He lost some of his teeth in a collision. This was one of the worst incidents I have witnessed in AFL. More of the focus during the game was on where Dustin Fletcher’s teeth were than on the game itself. He lost his teeth in a marking contest where he copped an accidental knee to the mouth by a West Coast player. He left the ground with a bloody mouth, making it evident that he had some teeth missing on the ground. They recovered the teeth and a dentist from the crowd came out and offered his services. He put the teeth in some milk and Dustin stayed in Perth the next day when he had his teeth put back into his mouth. For those interested, he was wearing a mouthguard, that obviously didn’t help!

He was suspended for 10 matches and was fined. The Brisbane veteran will not have great memories of not only the final but also the tribunal hearing the week afterwards. He took the blame admitting that he started the punch-up with Darryl Wakelin during the first quarter of the Grand Final. The 36 year old full-forward will have great memories of his brilliant 306 game career which included many premierships.

Fraser Gehrig. Fraser Gehrig, ‘The G Train,’ was unstoppable during 2004. The big St Kilda forward used his strength to overpower his opponents and his accurate kicking gave him a fantastic conversion rate when he went for goal. He kicked his 100th goal in the Preliminary Final against Port Adelaide, causing fans to rush onto the ground and Fraser was rushed off by security guards, who feared that his safety was in jeopardy. Port Adelaide won this match by one goal but it was a year to remember for Gehrig.

Wally Jackson. Being a Swans supporter, it was not only sad to see the Swans lose a game they should’ve won but also because of the loss of a person very close to the heart of many people involved with the Swans. Jackson was a fatherly, friendly figure to the Swans players and seeing them sob after the game and days afterwards showed me what a great person he was. The Swans bombed a 40 point lead at ¾ time to lose against the Kangaroos who were celebrating Glen Archer’s 250th game. The win was sealed by Corey Jones’ left foot banana kick from the boundary line that went through the goal post, with only seconds remaining on the clock.

Shaun Hart. Shaun Hart did play 273 games for the Brisbane Bears and the Brisbane Lions in a career that started in 1990. Being born in 1971, the short, nuggetty man was recruited to Brisbane from Shepparton United down in Victoria. His highest honour would be winning the 2001 Norm Smith Medal in their first of three straight Grand Final wins.

Adam Ramanauskas. Adam’s comeback should be inspiration for everyone, as it is so difficult to let alone recover from cancer but to play professional football again. The small, left footed Bomber defender showed his fighting skills on the field in a difficult year for him as it seemed that he was struggling to maintain his form and hold his position in the team.

Knee. It was amazing to see that Port Adelaide won the premiership despite losing the services of their two most experienced midfielders. Both have many prestigious accolades against their names including All-Australian honours and Best and Fairest awards. It shows how much depth a team like Port Adelaide has, especially in the midfield when they can easily interchange these two players with the likes of Josh Carr and Damien Hardwick.
Chris Judd. Aged only 21 when he won the Brownlow Medal, he has excited everyone including the umpires with his amazing speed and ball skills. He also won the West Coast Best and Fairest in 2004, which he rates in higher esteem as it was judged by club officials, playing a part in his early success. His girlfriend Rebecca, stole as much limelight on the night from the shy, young, modest man with her outrageous dress which would’ve fallen off her if the tape didn’t strap the dress to her body. Judd was recruited from Caulfield Grammar and the Sandringham Under 18’s side.
Port Adelaide by 40 points. After years of success in the regular season, it was a long overdue prize for Port Adelaide. They dominated on the day, especially after half time where they had more endurance and skills than Brisbane, winning 17.11.113 to 10.13.73, with Bryon Pickett being named the Norm Smith Medallist. The previous week, Port beat St Kilda 94 to 88 and Brisbane beat Geelong 84 to 75.
As a bit of history, Mark Williams, the Port coach was sacked as Collingwood captain by Leigh Matthews. Williams played 135 games with the Magpies from 1981-86, and 66 games with Brisbane from 1987-90. He was a forward line player who kicked 236 goals and never won a premiership in his playing career.

West Coast Eagles. West Coast continued their dominance in the regular season, recording 68 points. Adelaide followed on 64 points in 2nd, Fremantle surprisingly coming 3rd on 60, with the Swans in equal 4th with Collingwood and St Kilda on 56.
Danyle Pearce. Danyle Pearce, the Aboriginal speedster from Port Adelaide helped keep his side afloat in an otherwise disappointing season in which they focused on building a pool of young players who will contribute to success in the years to come. Pearce was destined to be a superstar himself.
West Coast and St Kilda. The match played on Thursday 30th March at Subiaco Oval, opened proceedings for season 2006 with West Coast starting their dominance of 2006 early by beating St Kilda in an exciting match.
