Puerto Rico. Bernie Williams was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico on September 13th 1968. As a teenager he was a keen athlete, and was in fact one of the world's top juniors at 400m. He studied biology at the University of Puerto Rico.

His ninth inning Grand Slam was the first ever Grand Slam to be hit in the Ballpark at Arlington. The last Yankee to hit a home run from each side of the plate in the same game had been Roy Smalley in 1982. In 1995 Bernie became the first ever player to hit home runs from both sides of the plate in a postseason game, something he repeated in 1996 and 1997.
