He was involved in an automobile accident. Monzon who was imprisoned for the murder of his second wife Alicia in 1989, was given a weekend furlough in January 1995. Upon returning to jail on 8 January 1995, the Hall of Famer was killed as he lost control of the vehicle he was driving and crashed into a truck.
