Angel Fish are small and are more likely to be found in home aquariums around New Zealand. Garfish or piper, are a small fish related to the mackerel. Orcas or killer whales are not fish, but they are seen frequently on the New Zealand Coast.

Stay clear, they are probably live bait fishing for Kingfish. A balloon attached to a live bait trace with a clothes peg is a common method of fishing for kingfish. Kingfish are inquisitive and sometimes come to inspect the balloon gently bouncing on the water.

skimmer. The skimmer is made to scoop the slush out of the hole. Some skimmers have rulers stamped into them. Some people drop their skimmer through the hole and have to buy a new one. Hold on tight.
cleats. Cleats go over your shoes/boots to give your traction on the ice. Many people end up getting hurt from falling on the ice.

downrigger. A downrigger is used for trolling. A tough technique to do while ice fishing.
spoon. A spoon is a lure that resembles a real spoon. It flutters in the water thus attracting fish.
three inches. One inch of ice can support a person, but the rule of thumb for safety is three inches to walk on. As little as six inches will support a truck, but the ice will pop and crack loudly under the weight.
Ice shanty. The ice fishing shanty is called a lot of things in other parts of the country, but in the Northeast it is mostly called a shanty.
tip-up. A tip-up is a common method for fishing through the ice for larger fish like lake trout. A spool of line, mounted on a wood or plastic frame, goes down through the ice and when a fish bites the bait it triggers a flag to spring up and alert the fisherman of the strike.
A jig with two small hooks baited with smelt. Smelt are a small bait fish found in northern lakes in America. They eat meat and are cannibals; they are commonly caught with pieces of smelt.

Largemouth Bass. A record bass was caught near Jacksonville, Georgia on June 2, 1932, by George Perry. It weighed 22 pounds 4 ounces and was caught from an oxbow lake off the Ocmulgee River called Montgomery Lake.

Catfish. The largest North American catfish is the blue catfish, which can grow to over 100 pounds. Trophy size blue cats are obese specimens with enormous bellies.
| Ok, we stopped by the bait shop and got a new pole. Its off to Oklahoma, just outside Pauls Valley to Longmire Lake. There's plenty of standing timber here so be careful of your casts, or we could run out of tackle fast! This lake is renowned for the type of fish we are going after today. Crappie. It can sometimes be tricky to identify a black crappie from a white one. The mottled spots on the back and fins are not always the telltale sign. The best way to identify the species is to count the number of spines in the dorsal fin. White crappie have five or six spines and black crappie have seven or eight spines.
| With the tackle box almost empty, we stop at the bait shop and restock. Now its off to Minaki, Ontario, for some good quality fishing on the English river. This next fish we are going after is considered to be one of the best eating freshwater fish in the world. It is a member of the perch family and it gets its name from the fact their eyes, not unlike cats, reflect light in a unique fashion. | Whew, after some good fishing and even better lunch, its off to the Florida Keys. The sun, the sand, the crystal blue waters, some of the best sportfishing in the world can be found right here. This next fish we're going after is one of most sought after in the area, a tremendous fighter with a silver side and known for make spectacular leaps out of the water. Tarpon. The life span of a tarpon can be in excess of 50 years. One of the oldest tarpon in captivity lived to be 63 years old.
| Now that was some good fun. Don't get tired on me now, we still have five more spots to hit. Next on the agenda, we're hitting the ocean. We catch a Deep Sea charter out of Margate, NJ. This next fish is a flatfish, the bigger ones are often called doormats. Their name also means to move in a clumsily manner, though it doesn't necessarily translate to this fish. Flounder. You can find out the age of the flounder by counting growth rings on their scale or ear bones.
| We head out a little deeper to sea and the fish finder picks up a school of fish. Excited, we drop our lines in the water, however, we are pretty disappointed to what we find. This fish has a flattened body and its skeleton is entirely cartilage. They have small spines on the tail and on the underside of the body. What kind of fish is this? | I'd Rather Be Fishing

Skate. This unfortunately has happened. On a fishing charter and having bad luck with the Sea bass and Flounder, the boat was put right over a school of skates, and for the last half hour that's all anyone caught. This is a hideous fish that looks like the Alien egg spawn.
| We head out a little deeper. The seas are getting rougher now, and I'm beginning to wish I remembered to bring Dramamine with me. Suddenly, you hook into something big. Real big. Great White Shark. "We're going to need a bigger boat" is a reference to the 1975 movie Jaws. In that movie, the town of Amity Island somewhere in New England. A great movie to watch, but not recommended if you're planning a beach trip.
| After that harrowing experience, We sail back what's left of our boat to shore. For the last two spots, let's stick to inland fishing, where its safe. Next we're headed to the Pine Barrens of New Jersey and Batsto lake. Let's hope the Jersey Devil doesn't interfere with our next catch. New Jersey is considered one of the best places to catch this next fish, a member of the pike family. Pickerel. Pickerel are a smaller form of the pike, and usually average between 2-5 pounds in weight, however they've been known to get as big as nine pounds.
| Well, we're almost done. Its been a long day, we've been to many places, and we've caught some great fish. We're both very tired and lazy at this point, so for the last leg of our fishing trip, we sneak into my neighbor's yard, who has a pond. Koi Carp. Just kidding, I would never fish for someone's pet. Unless of course their pet was a 12 pound Largemouth bass.
