Johnny Weir

He was injured while skating his long program. Johnny was well placed after skating his short program. He experienced problems within the first 30 seconds of performing his long program. While skating backwards, Johnny ran into the boards and fell. He was permitted to begin the program again from the point of the fall. He appeared shaken as he continued to skate. Johnny fell again while attempting to complete a triple axel jump. The fall injured his knee. At that point Johnny made the decision to stop the program and to withdraw from the event. The following year, Johnny using the same long program music, won his first Senior Men's Championship.
Sophia, Bulgaria. The American men made a very strong showing at this competition. Johnny came in 1st while teammate Evan Lycacek claimed 2nd place.

Equestrian. Johnny was doing well in equestrian events. However, both ice skating and equestrian are expensive and time consuming sports. Johnny comes from a family with limited resources and it did not take long at all before he was forced to chose one sport over the other.

Second Place. Johnny skated a clean performance which earned him high marks. He looked to be a sure bet for a medal in these Games, but fell to fifth place after making errors in the long program. There was much speculation regarding whether his extensive media interactions and shopping trips contributed to the errors in the long program.
12 years old. He was given a pair of skates as a Christmas present. He tried them out on a frozen cornfield near his house. It became evident early on that he was extremely talented. It took Johnny only five years to become the Junior Men's World Figure Skating Champion.

Johnny won this third consecutive Senior Men's title at this event. Johnny held on to win his third consecutive Senior Men's title, despite a somewhat subpar performance in the Long Program. His lead after a brilliant Short Program turned out to be enough to hold off a strong challenge from Evan Lycacek. Johnny had struggled with his Long Program all season. Following this National Championship, Johnny abandoned the program and returned to the Otonal long program that he had performed with great success during the previous skating season.
