Special Sub-Topic: We Made It!

In 2006, and for the first time in 22 years, the Detroit Tigers found themselves at the big one, going against the St. Louis Cardinals. Although the Cardinals hit only two home runs in the series, the Tigers had two players hit two each. Who joined Craig Monroe in hitting two home runs?

Sean Casey. The others weren't Tigers and Ventura was already retired. Casey's shots came in game four and the final in game five. He also hit two doubles in the series and batted .529 to lead the Tigers. St. Louis won the series, four games to one, and the Cardinals' David Eckstein was the series MVP.

1989 was called 'The Earthquake Series' because an earthquake hit the bay area in central California between two teams which suspended the series for 10 days. Who won this series, four games to none?
Oakland Athletics. The others were all American League teams and not located in California. It was Oakland vs San Francisco vs Mother Nature. The quake hit in game three on Oct 17. The Athletics had already beat the Giants 5-0, then 5-1. Oakland picked up where they left off, and finished the Giants off in four games. Oakland's Dave Stewart won two games and the series MVP, and Mike Moore took home two wins also.

The Milwaukee Braves won it all in 1957, then moved to Atlanta after the 1965 season. It would not be until 1991 that the Braves found the promised land again, but lost to a team whose franchise had won only two World Series prior after joining the American League in 1901. Which Tom Kelly managed team defeated the Braves in 1991?
Minnesota Twins. The Twins had won the World Series in 1987, and prior in 1924 as the Washington Senators. The 1991 squad was led by Chili Davis and Kirby Puckett who hit two home runs each, and pitcher Jack Morris who won two games for the Twins, including the game seven 1-0 shutout.

Reggie Jackson set a single series home run mark by hitting five in the 1977 World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Which team was Jackson playing for while setting this World Series record?
New York Yankees. Reggie's shots came in game four, five, and three in the coffin-sealing game six. The Yankees took the Dodgers down, four games to two.

After joining the Major Leagues in 1993, the Florida Marlins found themselves representing the National League in the World Series in 1997. Which Marlin pitcher won two games and took the MVP honors over the Indians?
Livan Hernandez. The others were all Indians. Hernandez won game one and game five in the four games to three win over Cleveland. Moises Alou hit three home runs for the Marlins also.

In which year did the great Babe Ruth play in his first World Series?
1915. Ruth began his career in 1914, and found himself in the promised land in 1915 with the Red Sox. He had only one at-bat against the Phillies in the series and grounded out. In 1916, against the Brooklyn Robins, Ruth pitched the entire 14 innings in game two, had an ERA of 0.64 and won the game. Babe played in a total of 10 World Series, winning seven.

In past New York Yankee style, the Atlanta Braves ruled the National League in the 1990s by going to five World Series. Who was at the helm of the Braves?
Bobby Cox. The others were all managers, but none ever managed the Braves. Although winning only one series in the decade, the Braves were dominant. Cox took over the Braves in midseason 1990 from Russ Nixon, then ran a streak of 14 playoff appearances in 15 seasons. Their 1995 series win was against Cleveland, and Atlanta's pitcher Tom Glavine was the series MVP.

1960 saw Bill Mazeroski hit a walkoff home run in the ninth inning for his Pirates, to take it all away from the New York Yankees in game seven. Who was the series MVP?
Bobby Richardson. The others were all Pirates, but did not begin their Major League careers yet by 1960. Richardson had 11 hits in the series, including two doubles, two triples, a home run, eights RBIs, and scoring eight runs. Mazeroski, whose home run in the series was his only great feat in baseball other than winning Gold Gloves, was inducted into the Hall of Fame. Richardson was still missing from the list almost 50 years later. The Yankees outscored the Pirates in the series, 55-27.

New York Giant Bobby Thomson's "shot heard around the world" put an end to the hopes of the Dodgers going to another World Series, and put his Giants there instead. The New York Yankees put a stop on the Giants, winning the series four games to two. Which year was this?
1951. In each of the other seasons listed, the Dodgers won the World Series. Thomson's 1951 shot came in a playoff game for the National League title against the Dodgers. After the Yankees were down two games to one in the series, they won game four, five, and six to win the title. The Yankees were led by Ed Lopat who won two games.

To ring in the 21st century, this team won their first World Series in only their fourth Major League season. Which team was this led by Bob Brenly?
Arizona Diamondbacks. The Diamondback franchise began in 1998 under the helm of manager Buck Showalter. 1998 was Brenly's first managerial season and he made the best of it, but, with Luis Gonzalez hitting 57 home runs, and both Curt Schilling and Randy Johnson winning over 20 games, Brenly's job looked easy. Arizona defeated the Yankees four games to three, with Schilling and Johnson sharing the series MVP honors.
