Robert Buell's last meal was a single black pitted olive. He chose this as his last meal as he hoped that an olive tree would spout from body after he died.

In that case, his knowledge of gardening or agriculture (or cookery or cocktails...) was sadly lacking. A pitted olive has had the pit or seed removed. Without that seed, no olive tree. link http://www.recipetips.com/glossary-term/t--35247/pitted-olive.asp

The full quote from great2's link:

"Robert Buell, in 2002, opted for a single, unpitted olive, in homage to Robert Ferguer, who in 1963 chose one pitted olive, in hopes that an olive tree would spout[I assume this is a typo for "sprout".] from his body after he dided. [sic]"

This is from another site:

"1. ROBERT BUELL, OHIO, 2002--A single black, unpitted olive. Actually, Buell was paying homage to to Victor Ferguer, the last prisoner executed by the federal government until Timothy McVeigh. Ferguer was hanged in 1963. His last meal--an olive with the pit still in it. He told prison officials that he hoped it would sprout from his body an olive tree -- a sign of peace. Ferguer's body was unclaimed by family and was quickly taken away by a funeral home after the execution and buried. His unmarked grave in a barren corner of a public cemetery bears no olive tree."

Poetic, if not scientific. (Qp doubts a canned olive pit has any life left in it to either spout or sprout. Of course nobody said it was canned.)

But mostly hypocritic, if he was indeed guilty of the crime for which he was executed. He said he wasn't, but admitted to others.
