The main psychological term to describe people who are deemed to be "control freaks", will fall under the diagnostic description of 'narcissism and/or being a narcissist and/or being narcissistic'. In psychology-related slang, "control freak" is a derogatory term for a person who attempts to dictate how everything around them is done.

In some individuals(number not known), narcissism can be seen to be asymptomatic of obsessive-compulsive disorder(ocd), but it is more likely to be a problem of its own, as many ocd sufferers are more likely to be interested in the control of their own individual social realm, rather than trying to affect the environments of those around them.

People diagnosed as a "control freaks" observes that incessant intervention is beneficial and/or even necessary. This is likely caused by feelings of superiority, as they believe others are incapable of handling things properly. They often have intense fear that things will go wrong if every detail doesn't get the attention they deem necessary. In other cases, "control freaks/narcissists" simply enjoy the feeling of power so much that it becomes automatic that they will try to gain control of as much of the psychological and physical stimuli surrounding themselevs and those around them.

Yes, I've read that being a "control freak" is a symptom of Narcissistic Personality Disorder but they're not interchangeable as such. I guess if you get paid for it, you can call it "micromanagement".
