What's the purpose of the (nozzle?) on the bottom of shaving cream cans?

I believe you are referring to the little rubber nub on the bottom of some cans. Depending on the source, it seems to be either (1) a stopper that is put in place after the addition of shaving cream, or the propellant, or some mixture of the two, or (2) the base of a pressurized internal bladder which expands inside the can to force the contents out when the nozzle on top is pushed.
