Why is it aqueduct not aquaduct?

The word is old French, from the Latin.

Aquae, genitive of aqua (water). A genitive is "possessive case or second case" modifying a noun to show "possession, measurement or source". Duct is from ducere (ductus), leading or conducting.

In other words it would be Aqua, if not for duct.
