"When Shirley was tiny, her hair was blonde (as her Mother's had been as a young child.) Shirley's hair, as her child star years progressed, was said (at a certain point) to be lightened by her mother with a gentle peroxide (hair) dye/lightener.
As Shirley grew slightly older (approx late 1937) her hair was left naturally darker...it was said to be a brown with reddish/rusty streaks/highlights. On film (late 1937/1938) it looked as if it were brown."
