Considering the metal detecting context, this definition seems to fit :
blakey (English)
Origin & history
From Blakey, a brand name of cast iron shoe protectors.
Noun
blakey (pl. blakeys)
A metal stud or plate fixed to the sole or heel of a shoe to prevent excessive wear. Also known as a seg.

Thanks. I did try to check I'd got the dialogue correct before I posted the question, but unfortunately came across this version which bowdlerises "shotgun" as "g*n". link https://transcripts.foreverdreaming.org/viewtopic.php?f=481&t=23424
