Presumably, Thomas Jefferson would not have been too upset had Jefferson City, Missouri been named 'Missouriopolis'. However, in 1826 the good burghers of Missouri decided to change the location of the state capital from St. Charles to Jefferson City which had been named (after considering alternatives) in honour of the third president of the nascent U.S.A. link https://www.worldatlas.com/cities/jefferson-city-missouri.html
