In 2012, Pohang, South Korea debuted the world's first robotic prison guards. These wheeled robots roamed jail corridors using cameras and behaviour, sensing software to spot signs of trouble, like violence or distress. They couldn't intervene physically, but they were programmed to alert human staff and allow remote communication. The goal was to ease the burden on prison officers and improve safety inside correctional facilities.
