Located directly at the Austrian-Hungarian border, the westernmost steppe lake in Europe can be found, Lake Neusiedl. The vast reed belt surrounding the shallow endorheic lake (around 180 km² in total, 100 km2 are located on the Austrian side), represents the second largest contiguous reed belt in Europe and provides a habitat especially for invertebrates, amphibians and birds.
