Otto II, despite being a German emperor, was buried in Rome. This was because he died in Rome of malaria on December 7, 983AD. Since it was in winter, it was decided not to transport Otto II back home and instead bury him where he died. However, his remains would later be moved to St. Peter Basilica in the Vatican.
