It's reserved for the entertainment industry to use as a fake number as it's allowable (by the phone company) for media usage.

It was used in 'The Insider', 'The Italian Job' and 'American Beauty'.

The 555 prefix has, in general, been used for fictional purposes only, in films, on television, and in novels. However, that is starting to change:

All 555 prefixes are reserved for movies. The area codes are real, but the prefix 555 means that the number does not exist.
