Something like: "Look back and look ahead," which would mean, idiomatically, "Look to the future and learn from the past."

Your school shares its motto with some other institutions.

left that school in 1983 {AYR ACADEMY]. never knew what the motto meant.think it was established over 7oo years ago?

You mean, were they using the motto in 1233? No idea, but there's no reason why the school couldn't genuinely have been founded then. There are some universities that go back at least that far.
