There are many variations of the game and each game can have a different number of sticks.

Mikado 41 sticks
Jonchets 30-40 sticks
Old-Timey Pickup Sticks 25 sticks

Thus, there is no definitive answer as requested in Question #85728. It appears to go game by game.

Mikado is a pick-up sticks game originating in Europe. In 1936 it was brought from Hungary to the USA and was mostly called pick-up sticks.

The classic Mikado game consists of 41 sticks. They are coded with different values that have a total of 170 points and are around 15 cm long.

This site says that Pick-up-Sticks uses 40 sticks.

This site as 33 sticks per game:

Pick-up sticks. You know the game. You drop 33 colored sticks in a pile and take turns trying to pick them up, one at a time, without disturbing any of the other sticks in the process. If you pick-up a stick successfully, you get another turn

Bradley's has 30, there is clearly not a modern standard but probably an original number.
