The Boating Party
By Mary Cassatt
Author Award for May 2023
One of the few women to find success during the Post-Impressionist movement, Mary Cassatt painted "The Boating Party" when she was 49 years old. The abstract geometry and atypical angles found within the painting were considered bold choices in her time.
Prior to painting, Cassatt had visited a Japanese print exhibition in Paris, and like many Post-Impressionist painters, Japanese artworks influenced her own immensely. Cassatt did much to bring French avant-garde art to her home country of the United States, and "The Boating Party" was the centerpiece of her exhibition there.
