Liberty Leading the People
By Eugene Delacroix
Author Award for April 2023
Sometimes mistakenly believed to portray the more famous French Revolution of 1789, "Liberty Leading the People" actually commemorates a second French uprising known as the July Revolution of 1830. In effect, this means the painting depicts events that had actually occurred that same year rather than some patriotic historical event from long ago.
Eugène Delacroix, a devotee of the French Romantic movement, gave the Liberty of this painting a Phrygian cap, a frequent symbol of freedom in Western societies. The painting also features the French Tricolore, the flag of the French Revolution that later became the national flag of that country.
