The Fighting Temeraire
By J. M. W. Turner
Author Award for June 2023
"The Fighting Temeraire" is perhaps a particularly British painting, as its themes match those often found in British literature and culture. The painting features the mighty HMS Temeraire, one of the last ships-of-the-line to see action in the Battle of Trafalgar. But instead of a triumphant display of British naval might, the painting depicts the gallant ship being towed by a more-futuristic steam tug towards its ultimate fate of becoming scrap.
The morose color of the sky appears to agree with the melancholic scene. In 2020, the ship and its tug, along with a portrait of the painter, were included on the £20 banknote, cementing its status as Britain's most beloved painting.
