Girl with a Pearl Earring
By Johannes Vermeer
Author Award for January 2023
Perhaps the most recognized work of the Dutch Golden Age movement, Girl with a Pearl Earring shows a young girl of European descent in exotic dress. It is an example of the Dutch tronie, a fictional depiction of a character rather than a portrait of a living person.
The pearl on the girl's ear is improbably large, leading some art historians to dispute it being a pearl at all. The blue ultramarine pigment used in the painting was incredibly rare, being more expensive than gold in the years that Vermeer was an active painter. It is unknown how he was able to afford or acquire it.
