The Hay Wain
By John Constable
Painting Information
John Constable's "The Hay Wain" shows a wooden farm wagon crossing a shallow millpond on the River Stour. In the context of the painting's title, a "wain" is a wagon, so it refers to a cart used for carrying hay. The scene is closely tied to Constable's own childhood geography: Flatford Mill, just out of view, was operated by his family for nearly a century, and the nearby Willy Lott's Cottage appears on the left. The River Stour also marks the border between Suffolk and Essex, placing the painting in the rural landscape the artist knew best.
The painting belongs to Constable's series of large exhibition canvases known as "six-footers," works made on an ambitious scale for display at the Royal Academy. Though "The Hay Wain" is now one of Britain's best-loved paintings, it did not sell when first exhibited in London under the title "Landscape: Noon". It actually found greater success in France, where it won a gold medal at the Paris Salon of 1824 and influenced a number of younger French artists. With its bright sky and careful detailing of rural labor, the painting helped elevate the ordinary English countryside into a major subject for art.
