Henri Matisse's "Dance" exists in two major versions, both featuring a ring of nude figures in motion against a simplified landscape of green and blue. The earlier version, now housed at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, was exhibited at the 1909 Salon d'Automne and reflects Matisse's Fauvist approach with its playful rhythms and bright palette. The second, more finished version was commissioned by Russian collector Sergei Shchukin and now hangs in the Hermitage Museum. While nearly identical in composition, the later version uses deeper colors and more intense contrasts, and is sometimes seen as more primal or even menacing in tone.

These paintings are landmarks of Fauvism, with their flat areas of vivid color, disregard for naturalistic detail, and focus on pure emotional expression. Though controversial in its time for its break from academic tradition, "Dance" has become one of the most iconic representations of 20th-century modernism.
