As a leading member of the Impressionist circle, Berthe Morisot often painted women and children in private interiors and garden settings, preferring the quiet reflection of domestic life over grand public scenes. In this work, a young woman sits at a table after a meal, absorbed in her own thoughts as light filters softly into the room. Her sister Edma frequently served as her model in earlier works, though the identity of the sitter in this painting has not been definitively established. Although Edma had largely withdrawn from professional modeling after marriage, the closeness and familiarity in Morisot's domestic scenes recall the bond the sisters shared in youth.

Like much of Morisot's art, "After Lunch" relies on loose brushwork and a luminous palette rather than fine detail. In 2013, "After Lunch" became the highest-selling work by a woman artist at auction at that time, drawing renewed attention to Morisot's place within art history. Once overshadowed by her peers, she is now recognized as a central figure of Impressionism.
