View of Toledo

"View of Toledo" is one of two surviving landscapes by El Greco, a Greek-born painter who spent most of his career in Spain. Born Doménikos Theotokópoulos on the island of Crete, El Greco trained in the Byzantine style before studying in Venice and eventually settling in Toledo.

What many art historians consider fascinating in "View of Toledo" is its stormy, otherworldly sky, which was painted in deep blues and greens. Scholars have long debated whether the sky reflects an actual storm or a metaphysical one, with some linking it to apocalyptic imagery from the Book of Revelation.
