The Swing

Commissioned by a French aristocrat, Jean-Honoré Fragonard's "The Swing" features a young woman mid-air on a swing, her shoe flung off her foot, while a hidden suitor watches from below in the bushes. The swing is pushed by an oblivious older man (possibly her husband) creating a cheeky visual triangle. The scene is a stunningly forward example of the frivolity and erotic undercurrents so common in Rococo era painting.

The work took on a different fate during the French Revolution, when its owner, Marie-François Ménage de Pressigny, was guillotined and his collection seized by the revolutionary government. Despite its aristocratic origins, "The Swing" survived the political upheaval and remains one of the most beloved images of pre-revolutionary France. Though often seen as a lighthearted romantic fantasy, the painting also reflects the decadence and escapism of France's "ancien régime" in its final decades.
