The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp

Commissioned in connection with the Amsterdam Guild of Surgeons, Rembrandt's "The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp" depicts a public dissection led by the guild's anatomy lecturer, Dr. Tulp. Rather than arranging the surgeons in a stiff row, Rembrandt turned the group portrait into a dramatic lesson in progress, with each figure reacting differently to the demonstration. The corpse is that of the executed criminal Aris Kindt, whose body was used for the anatomy lesson shortly after his death. Painted when Rembrandt was still in his twenties and newly established in Amsterdam, the work helped announce him as a major talent.

Public anatomy lessons in the Dutch Republic were major social events; these dissections were typically held in winter and attended by both medical professionals and paying spectators from the public. The tendons and muscles in the arm have often been praised as generally quite accurate, though modern anatomical studies have noted a few discrepancies.
