Sudden Shower over Shin-Ohashi Bridge and Atake

By Utagawa Hiroshige

Part of Utagawa Hiroshige's celebrated series "One Hundred Famous Views of Edo," "Sudden Shower over Shin-Ohashi Bridge and Atake" captures pedestrians caught in a sudden downpour over the Sumida River in what is now Tokyo. Hiroshige chose a view of the wooden Shin-Ohashi Bridge, looking toward the Atake district on the opposite bank, an area named for a government ship that had once been moored there. In the river below, a boatman poles a narrow craft carrying timber toward the lumberyards of nearby Fukagawa. The people hurrying across the bridge protect themselves however they can, using umbrellas, straw rain capes, and broad hats made from materials such as bamboo or woven straw.

Hiroshige was particularly skilled at depicting changing weather, and here the heavy rain is represented by fine diagonal lines crossing in different directions, a difficult effect for the woodblock carvers who translated his design into print. Dark clouds above were created using bokashi, a technique that produced gradual changes in color and tone. The print appeared only two years after the devastating 1855 Edo earthquake and shows the recently rebuilt Shin-Ohashi Bridge. It later became one of Hiroshige's best-known works in Europe: Vincent van Gogh was such an admirer that in 1887 he produced an oil-painted copy of the composition.
