Woman with Blue Eyes

In the art world, if one were to gaze upon a modernist painting and see solid blue eyes staring back at them, their immediate thought would be "Amedeo Modigliani." His 1918 painting "Woman with Blue Eyes" is no exception. A member of the École de Paris, Modigliani was no stranger to experimenting with different head and body positions, shapes, and expressions in his portraits.

Near the end of his short life, he moved in with the artist Jeanne Hébuterne, who became his common-law wife. She became the subject of a number of his paintings, sometimes depicted with his distinctive blue eyes and sometimes with dark eyes. After his death at 35 from tubercular meningitis, Hébuterne tragically ended her own life shortly after.
