San Giorgio Maggiore at Dusk

Having reportedly remarked that Venice was "too beautiful to be painted," Claude Monet nevertheless attempted with this scene of the island of San Giorgio Maggiore and its monastery. The painting belongs to a series, which depicts the monastery during several different times of day in different lighting conditions.

"San Giorgio Maggiore at Dusk" was painted in the time period in which Monet had begun to have complications due to cataracts, a devastating disease for a painter. It wasn't until fifteen years later that he would undergo surgery for his condition. This particular painting was featured in the 1999 film "The Thomas Crown Affair," where it was fictitiously stolen during a heist.
