Marie Antoinette with a Rose

This version of "Marie Antoinette with a Rose," with the queen donning a blue-grey silk dress, is essentially a do-over. The first version done by court painter Elisabeth Vigee Le Brun showed the queen in a cotton chemise dress. When it was displayed in the Salon, visitors were shocked to see the queen dressed in something so unbecoming of a portrait.

The original painting was removed, and a second was quickly painted to replace it. The replacement also had the added benefit of slyly showing off political support for Lyon's silk-weaving industry. It would be nine years later in which Marie Antoinette would find her end.
