Red Canna

O'Keeffe was an avid gardener, cultivating a wide variety of flowers both at her Lake George summer home and later in the arid landscape of New Mexico. The canna lily, with its curves and vibrant red-orange petals, became a favorite subject of hers. In "Red Canna" (1919), she contrasts the red of the lily with a dark background.

O'Keeffe also famously painted irises, jimsonweed, poppies, and calla lilies in similar fashion. Critics and viewers have long debated the symbolism of her flower paintings, with some interpreting them as sensual or even anatomical, though O'Keeffe herself rejected such readings. She insisted the works were simply about showing people what she saw in flowers: beauty, complexity, and power.
