Subject: Thank God for Buddy Holly

Posted by: sadwings
Date: May 14 17

This is about everything rock and roll from the 50's to the present, but that's only the beginning. Any poets out there? I have a couple of poems to share before too long. Misunderstood song lyrics are always a lot of fun. Favorite album cover art? Any wild or interesting concert experiences? Prefer Motown to rock? Jazz? Blues? You can share all of these things and much more here. Come one come all to the midnight ball! Let's do this!

Okay, gang, here's my nerdy poem about the evolution of that obnoxious heavy metal stuff. In fact, the title is The Ultimate Evolution. I have wanted for many years to change the title because I really don't like it, but I can't come up with anything else to save my life.

Anyway, other than the first word of a line, the capitalized words are the names of rock bands or the people in them. Many have been shortened or abbreviated. There are tons of artists who didn't get mentioned like they very well could have been, but in a nutshell, this is how it all panned out............

It began one day with the cry of the Wolf
Over the mountain and across the stream
On the wings of the Butterfly and barrel of the Gun
So spread the sounds of Bloodrock and Cream

A thunder so distant and yet so near
Blue Cheer and Humble Pie were parts of the step
Who knew this monster would become what it did
As the foundation grew solid with the impact of Zep

The slow march was joined by Purple and Heep
Even the Sabbath was no time to rest
Bachman and Turner made a nice contribution
To the growing form of rock to soon lead the rest

Nugent had a stranglehold on a class all alone
As the spectrum quickly grew to this and to that
Blackmore and Dio were among the very many
To make their mark along with Naz and Foghat

The winds of change had arrived in full
As the animal called "metal" became rock's feast
Boundaries expanding with style and with vision -
And blown to sheer oblivion by the mastery of Priest

The ultimate evolution is here to stay
Defenders of the faith, we are many, but one
The undying spirit, unquestioned and true
Will ride the wind unchallenged til the last day is done

All over God's front lawn, my friends.

And speaking of poetry, yours is pretty cool Jazmee. Does the one that begins "I could be mean, I could be angry" have a name/title?

Thanks, guys.

Groove metal! Don't think I've ever heard that term before. I know one thing, after I check out all of that WZ with Black Sunshine, I'm going to want to check out some of that Goo Goo dolls you were talking about, V man. I've been familiar with the name for many years but I had no idea that they were even associated with hard rock. I always thought they were like The Bangles or the Spice Girls or whatever.

Anyway, you said it was their first album? What's the name of it? I think I made Elle mad at me when I was joking around about them. She suddenly stopped coming around. I didn't mean any disrespect or anything, I don't dis my pals.

"In your dreams, Kev..." Hahaha!

I didn't really give my opinion of the Goo Goo Dolls, I was vague, remember? I just wanted to know what others thought, since I've heard and read everything I typed in quotes about them.

Go watch some of their early live performances. Those boys rocked. And then "Iris" came along with a lot of ballads to follow. Some people swear it was grunge that "took them down and out," whatever that means. Some people swear they used to be punk, but then they "sold out." Personally, I've always liked them, and don't see them as a band that just fell off the face of the earth. They're still alive and kickin.'

I hesitate posting YouTube links in here, mostly because the "comments" section is rarely rated G and I like flying under the "you're in trouble now" radar.

Here is my next wild generalization:

I have yet to meet anyone of the male persuasion who doesn't practically worship Rush. And I don't know anyone female who even sort of likes them. Go watch concert footage of them, and let me know if you see one single girl in that sea of boys.

For a really long time, I thought Rush, Air Supply and Styx were all the same band, and I really didn't like them! And again, if I say that to anyone male, their heads practically explode!

The world is, the world is
Love and life are deep
Maybe as his eyes are wide

My Elle pal is back! :-)

You know, you are exactly right about those comments hardly ever being G rated. I never stopped to think about that. I'll have to pay close attention to that from now on.

I am a huge Rush fan, they are just amazing. As far as what they sound like live, they have to be one of the best rock bands in the world. I wish so very many of the harder rock and metal bands could sound that crystal clear live.

Elle, I have been wanting to ask you for the longest time how your team got it's name. No doubt from Nikola Tesla, or however he spells his name, right? Well, I would hope that anyone playing for - especially as captain - for a team with that name would be familiar with who does this awesome tune and video.......

It's a showdown in a no-man's land
For the cowboy of the modern day
Come on, sundown, don't be hangin' 'round
'Cause the cowboy will blow you away.....

Well, we haven't done any misunderstood song lyrics yet. I have a bunch of them, but I don't want to do them all at once.

Here's a line from a serious record breaking record - Rumours from Fleetwood Mac. This thing was the top-selling album of all time after it first came out, and it was at #7 about 20 years ago. I would think that there is no possible way it is out of the top 20 yet. May even still be in the top 10.

Anyway, remember Second Hand News? I don't think they actually say the title until the very end of the song when they say "I'm just second hand news" like four times right at the end. Well, I swear it sounds like they are saying...

I'm your second hand dude, I'm your second hand duuuuude, yeah
I'm your second hand dude, I'm your second hand duuuuuude, yeah

AHYUK! I don't know how "just" could sound like "your" but it really does sound like they are saying that. Check it out sometime! :-)

Um… this is embarrassing.

I did same as you. most of that was song lyrics. That whole “I could be mean” thing is a song, not by me. There are a bunch of song lyrics in that p ost. None of that is my original stuff. Title? “Just like you.” Artist? I know who sang it, but I cant tell you everything.

Another song in there is “All These Lives.” Different artist.

There are sites of artists and there lyrics. All I did is go to one and copy most if not all of what is there on that page.

I feel like I’m forgetting something, but that’s nothing new.

Only actual poem of mine was one about animals and ones about my bird (one in here and two in my blog, least I think that’s what I did). I would have to look through what I wrote recently. I don’t keep anything older. That’s how my life is; although there are a few poems I rewrite from time to time. Song about hope is mine, though; forget where I put that. I basicly forget everything after I do it (with some exceptions). If I ever find a song to describe that, I’ll let you know.

So, see? Both of us did same thing. We don’t know a song, so we think it’s just the other’s poem. Just illustrates my point. That’s all music is. It tells a story, and lyrics are just poetry… and just part of how saixd story is told.

(more song lyrics…)

The road now leads onward
As far as can be
Winding lanes
And hedgerows in threes
By purple mountains
And round every bend
All roads lead to you
There is no journey's end.

Here is my heart and I give it to you
Take me with you across this land
These are my dreams, so simple and few
Dreams we hold in the palm of our hands

Deep in the winter
Amidst falling snow
High in the air
Where the bells they all toll
And now all around me
I feel you still here
Such is the journey
No mystery to fear.

Here is my heart and I give it to you
Take me with you across this land
These are my dreams, so simple and few
Dreams we hold in the palm of our hands

The road now leads onward
And I know not where
I feel in my heart
That you will be there
Whenever a storm comes
Whatever our fears
The journey goes on
As your love ever nears

Here is my heart and I give it to you
Take me with you across this land
These are my dreams, so simple and few
Dreams we hold in the palm of our hands

(I love that song, and that’s not rock… but the other songs I copied are)

Someone just informed me that my blog doesn't have anything to do with Buddy Holly as the title suggests. Evidently they totally missed the true meaning of the title. Someone may be thankful that America is not part of Great Britain and want to celebrate and commemorate that on a blog entitled "Thank God for George Washington" or "Thank God for Nathan Hale" or whatever. That would open the door to talk about all things American, not just one individual.

In addition, this person obviously didn't bother to read the description of this blog. Although he is certainly a welcome topic of discussion at any time, this is not necessarily about Buddy Holly directly, it is about what he had a hand in innovating and bringing to the forefront of American culture - rock and roll music - as well as all things musically related, as the blog description clearly explains.

However, with all of that really being beside the point, I would like to say a few words about Mr. Holly........

Ahem. First of all, I honestly don't know a great deal about the man. He came from a musically-oriented family in Lubbock Texas, and he unfortunately died in a plane crash when he was only 22 years old. I believe this was in 1959, a few years before I was born. I do know that when rock and roll was first beginning to be developed and take shape in America, Mr. Holly was among the frontrunners who had a hand in its development. We will obviously never know how far he would have gone and how successful he would have become if he had lived, but I'm certain the man would have been far from finished with his career in music.

Here's a little tidbit I can't help sharing. There was a movie made quite a number of years ago called The Buddy Holly Story, and the actor who portrayed Mr. Holly was Gary Busey, who is from my hometown of Tulsa, Oklahoma. I may not have my spelling entirely correct here, but Mr. Busey began his career in the entertainment industry as a character named Teddy Jack Eddy on a show called Mazeppa Pompazoidi's Uncanny Film Festival and Camp Meeting, which originated and I believe was filmed right here in Tulsa. The star of the show was an incredibly funny actor named Gailord Sartain, and the show was just as funny as the title, believe me!

At any rate, Mr. Holly is certainly a very welcome topic of discussion at any time. I will leave you with the first verse of what could very well be his most popular song.....

If you knew Peggy Sue
Then you'd know why I feel blue
Without Peggy
My Peggy Sue
Oh well, I love you gal, yes, I love you Peggy Sue.......

Was the person who attempted to explain your blog title to you a Moderator? Was "change" mentioned as a condition for keeping your blog? If not, I don't know, maybe they were trying to be helpful. If not, consider the source, shrug it off, and just move on. You are so enthusiastic, I just don't want to see you shot down (in a blaze of glory) before you even get off the ground.

This is why I suggested a blog, rather than just starting a thread in the Music chat board. You can talk about anything you want in here.

And yes, I love the Young Guns movies, although I haven't seen them in a long time.

Kevin, I think posting YouTube links is fine; I just personally don't usually do it. I don't think it's a site rule.

See? I knew you would love Rush. Everyone with a Y chromosome loves them. I don't "get" them, at all. It's even worse if I watch them while listening to them.

How did we become Tesla Coil... Well, first of all, you do know what a Tesla Coil is, right?

And I find it kind of funny,
I find it kind of sad.
The dreams in which I'm dying
Are the best I've ever had
I find it hard to tell you
'Cause I find it hard to take.
When people run in circles
It's a very, very
Mad world.

Anyone remember Heard it in a Love Song by The Marshall Tucker Band? They say the title a bunch of times in it. In fact, the chorus goes...

Heard it in a love song
Heard it in a love song
Heard it in a love song
Can't be wrong

I was in junior high school when this came out and I was listening to the radio a lot while I wasn't in school. The radio stations must have loved this one because they played the daylights out of it. Well, for a number of years, I could have sworn they were saying "Purty little love song".

I remember thinking "Purty little LOVE song?! Oh, my God, how goofy!" Of course, that didn't stop me from listening to it, it's actually a nice little tune and I like it, so don't anybody jump all over me, please.

Anyway you guys check that one out and see if you can sing along to it, only sing "Purty little love song" instead of the real lyrics and see how far you can get without laughing!

My Elle pal! You slipped those two posts in while I was typing my last one and I flew off to my next destination before I even noticed.

Nope, the person who commented about my blog was not a moderator, so I'm not in trouble or anything.

When it comes to music - modern music - most people like simple, easy, monotonous grooves that just repeat over and over like clockwork from beginning to end. It's easy to develop a nice little rhythm so that even most Caucasians can dance to it. That's why rap is so hugely popular and that's why simple, monotonous put-me-to sleep crap is so hugely popular. It's very easy to understand and very easy to know what's coming next because it's exactly the same thing that's been happening ever since the song first started. Rush are just as far away from that as you can possibly get. They are just simply not made that way.

I have heard Rush being called "The thinking man's metal" from writers and critics, which of course is a compliment, not a criticism. They are totally in a class all by themselves. I have known quite a few major Rush fans throughout my life, and every one of them have something in common - they are all very intelligent. That's something that gradually dawned on me over the years, I didn't notice it right away, but there has never been a single exception to that to this very day. I'm not saying that people who don't like Rush are not intelligent, that is so totally not what I'm saying at all. I'm just making an honest observation of every Rush fan I've ever known in my life. Their music just totally takes my mind to far away places that fascinate the hell out of me.

Anyway, here's how intelligent I am - no, I honestly have no idea what a Tesla Coil is. Does it have anything to do with any of Nikola Tesla's inventions or something? If so, then maybe I have heard the term and just forgotten it. Or does it not have anything to do with him? Inform me, you've got me all curious!

So did you catch that that one verse was from Tesla? That is a cool video and probably my favorite Tesla song.

What about that Marshall Tucker song, do you remember that one? "Purty little love song!" Ahyuk! I swear that's what I thought they were saying for YEARS, Elle! Dial it up and listen to it and see for yourself and see if you don't start laughing or at least smile. Laughter is good for you!

Okay, gotta hit the sack for a few. Gotta get up and wheel over to the store and pick up a few things before it gets too hot. I don't tolerate the heat very well and it gets worse and worse every year. I don't know what the deal is, it never really bothered me until about 10 or so years ago.

Anyway, I'll leave you with a special little love song I would like to dedicate to all those silly little terrorists and America-haters out there..........

Whipcrack
Stings the sky
Don't mess with me, I'm danger
The meanest one alive

Earthquake
Breaks the Richter scale
The more that you resist
The more the pain you'll feel

I'm blazing on to glory
There's thunder in my veins
And nothing stands before me
Forever I'll remain

Hard as iron
Sharp as steel
Stop for no man
You better beg and kneel

Untouched
Cold as ice
I'll turn your blood to water
Strangle in my vice

Shockwaves
BONES TO DUST
You're messing with a minefield
So expect the worst

I'm blazing on to glory
There's thunder in my veins
And nothing stands before me
Forever I'll remain

Hard as iron
Sharp as steel
Stop for no man
You better beg and kneel

As I destroy
Last thing you'll hear me cry
Is victory
Is victory..............

I know somebody who tried to convince everyone around a certain song was saying, “I come from Orlando.” Hehehehe. Nobody bought that. We all argued with him (he’s gotta be… in his 60s? maybe…)

My mother likes making up her own lyrics, whether she knows them or not. She’s one of those people who cant carry a tune but loves singing (in the car, shower, etc.)

They say that pretty much everyone with a voice can be taught how to sing and I really believe that. I couldn't sing at all when I was little or probably even into my 20's but I just took the time to listen to what I was singing to - when I was nice and alone - and took the time to control my voice and make it do more or less the same as what I was hearing. My range has probably got to be about as minimum as it gets, I don't really know, but at least I can carry a tune.

Not only that, but there are certain songs I will sing in front of a crowd with no problem, but I am more or less the same way with singing in front of a crowd as I am with shooting pool - I normally like to have a few beers first. The only thing is, if I'm not careful and I've had too many, I don't shoot as well as I would like and my desire to sing in front of people just kind of goes away.

I don't do karaoke very often, but when I do, my go to song has got to be Long Haired Country Boy by Charlie Daniels. I've had people tell me it really sounds like Charlie himself. I guess he must be singing that song in the perfect key for me, I don't know what it is. The strange thing about it is, the lyrics to that song fit me like a latex glove! You should listen to it sometime and think about me!

There's a post from Terry at the top of the list of blogs where he says they can be about whatever you like "within our basic rules of decency and appropriateness of course" which is generally interpreted to mean "follow the General Board rules and you won't go far wrong". In other words we'd prefer Heavy Metal to some other things - and there can't be many places where that's true!

As for YouTube, you need to be very careful. The problem is that many comments on many YouTube videos don't go with FT's family-friendly policy. It's part and parcel of the US rules for the protection of children on websites that there should be a general policy of care displayed not just on the main site but on sites it links to, so I'd suggest you all err on the side of caution - especially as YouTube pages can be fine one minute and covered in abuse the next. There are other video/music sharing sites so if you really want to link something, you may need to research them.

As for this blog not being about Buddy Holly... well, thank goodness for that! I spent a lot of my formative years listening to his music on the steam radio and because he died young there really wasn't much of it so it got repeated. And repeated. And repea... aaargh!

But nowadays music is repeated excessively regardless... and commercials too. Something about money to the station.

Flopsy! My friend from the holy land! No, I'm only kidding - but I really do kind of consider Birmingham the holy land in a fun and lighthearted and metal sort of way. But then, I would probably feel the same way about London and Liverpool and a bunch of other places over there if I found myself actually there.

I don't know, but if I was told I could visit only one city in England for a week, I think I might just wind up picking London over Birmingham. That is, unless they ever established a Rob Halford or a Judas Priest museum in Birmingham. I'd just have to go there then. :-) I bet all the Bitish Royalty of many centuries past would probably turn over in their graves! Well, the alimighty Priest Beast DO have an album called British Steel. Seems like that - along with all their remarkable achievements - would be enough to allow them to have a little ol' museum in their holy name over there.

Yeah, I know what you mean about songs getting repeated a lot. I guess that's just all a part of what radio stations do. I hardly ever listen to the radio any more, but for years my favorite radio station over here had this "No repeat Thursdays" or whatever day it was. I always liked listening on those days. Now I just bring stuff up on my computer or listen to CD's or one of my music channels on tv that play commercial free music 24-7.

Well, Varnish, I finally got around to checking out all of La Sexorcisto. You are right, there might be more yeahs on there than any other album ever made. 14 songs - that's almost a double album right there. My fave tune would probably be a tossup between Soul Crusher and Grindhouse. I can see this stuff firing up a few mosh pits! I loved that photo of them hanging out with the Pantera dudes, too. I have a cousin who went to high school with a couple of the Pantera guys down in Arlington, TX.

Yeah, the WZ cats have "Devil Music" in the title of that CD, but if they were to ever give out an award for REAL devil music, I think that would probably have to go to King Diamond. That guy's stuff is just about as satanic as it gets!
