My favorite would be John F. Kennedy, followed closely by Abraham Lincoln Reply #1. Mar 03 09, 11:07 AM |

Lincoln and TR are well up there -- a lot of recent presidents have claques pulling for them, but whether history will follow popular opinions is unclear. Dave Reply #5. Mar 04 09, 7:39 PM |

Another Reaganite. The guy traded weapons for hostages. He armed the enemy! Worst president of my lifetime. Period! Never, and I mean NEVER arm the ones that want to kill you. Yes, he saved some hostages, but how many died because of those weapons he traded? That part isn't in the history. I wonder why. But, he does have Lyndon Johnson beat though. Reply #8. "Never, and I mean NEVER arm the ones that want to kill you." Maybe someone needs to call Obama and Mrs. Clinton and inform them of that. Reply #10. Mar 05 09, 7:55 AM |

With Obama taking us the way he is I'll say Carter may move up a notch in the grand scheme. Reply #12. Mar 06 09, 10:12 AM |

I am seeing Carter on this list more then I expected, though he is usually grouped with all other 20th century Democrats as a whole. I personally find his work outside of the Presidency to be his greatest achievement. Possibly even have done the most while not President. I don't find his acts as President all that noteworthy though. Reply #13. Mar 06 09, 1:56 PM |

Thomas Jefferson. April 29, 1962 The White House honors 49 Nobel Prize winners, prompting JFK to comment upon the "extraordinary collection of talent, of human knowledge that has ever been gathered together at the White House - with the possible exception of when Thomas Jefferson dined alone." Apparently, JFK shared my opinion of our third President. In any event, it's a great quote! Reply #15. Mar 09 09, 8:18 PM |

Can we set the record straight here? Reagan got the credit for getting the hostages out of Iran (after a Canadian - Ken Taylor - with whom I went to high school - sheltered them in the Canadian embassy), but it was Carter who did all the major negotiating! Reply #17. Mar 12 09, 9:36 AM |

C30, let me guess - you're a southerner, right? Ol' Jeff was the President of the CSA not the USA, and does not, therefore, qualify as a candidate for inclusion on this thread. Reply #19. Mar 13 09, 8:13 AM |

Cymruambyth.........wrong on all counts! Topic is "Favorite American Presidents". Jefferson Davis was American, he was President of the Confederate States of America agreed, but nothing in the theme topic says a favorite has to be of the UNITED STATES so CONFEDERATE STATES must therefore qualify as they were American. Finally I am not American myself. Reply #20. Mar 13 09, 11:06 AM |
