What is your favorite type of fighter plane? Mine is the F-22.

Gadzooks, what a question! It could be re-worded to 'What's your favourite destroyer of life and the environment?" or "What's your favourite weapon of war?" or "What's your preferred method of torture?" Uggh!

Cym, people have interests of all sorts. If they want to ask a question about it, no problem. If someone asked a question in Hobbies about which type of stich people preferred to use for a certain job, I'd just ignore it and not post a reply.

The old Hawker Hunter, for sentimental reasons.

A very good looking aircraft.
Another one originating from the Hawker stable is the Harrier and its derivatives.
Agile, multipurpose, go anywhere.
What more could you ask for?

The good old Mosquito. A teriffic machine that brought a lot of its crews home.

I liked watching Harrier jump jets take off from jungle sites to go spotting drug plantations in Central America.
One minute a quiet rainforest, next minute mega noise and vertical lift off.

I'm an amateur plane spotter and photographer. I love attending the airshows down here and listening to the thunder of the jets. It would be hard to pick a favorite but the ones that hold a special place for me would be. 1. The Hawker Hunter. 11 years ago at an airshow I just couldn't resist the urge to get up close with the rear end as one taxied onto the runway. I suffered second degree burns to my face. I love the smell of aviation gas :) 2. Would be the English Electric Lightning, beautiful and magnificent aircraft. Sadly on Saturday November 14th 2009 I watched in horror as one crashed at an airshow. The pilot Dave Stock was killed. 3. The F-18 Hornet, I can't wait to see one for real and I hope to see the Blue Angels one day. 4. The BAE Hawk. 5. The JAS 39 Gripen. 6. The Dassault Mirage F1. My list could go on but I'll stop there.

My Dad was a WWII fighter pilot and he preferred the Hurricane to the Spitfire. I agree with the Lightning (and the recent crash was extremely sad) and I also like the F-5, the Mig-29, the Mosquito (not strictly a fighter, but neither is the A-10, another favourite), the Harrier and the Mi-24 (helicopter).

There have been so many great fighter aircraft through the years. From the British SE5a & German Albatross D V in WWI through to the Phantom & English Electric Lightning of the 60s. With the exception on the Harrier, there hasn't really been much to interest me since then. (Although the F22 Raptor with it's thrust-vectoring & supercruising capabitities is something special.)

My dad's favoUrite of WW2 was the P38 Lightning while I always had a liking for the P47 Thunderbolt. But when it comes down to it, you can't beat the sight & sound of the good old Spitfire. Has there ever been a better sounding engine than the RR Merlin? I think not!

As you can see, this is a subject close to my heart.

Also the Fokker D.VII. Pretty impressive machine to be mentioned in a special clause in the Armistice with Germany in 1918.

I'm happy to vote for the Spitfire too.

I've been watching James May's Toy Stories, a television series in which he takes traditional toys, and blows them up to real life sizes.

The latest episode is about Airfix, and he commissioned a life-size Airfix kit of the Spitfire. Here's a tiny clip showing the pieces of the 30' Airfix kit, ready to be assembled and painted.

It doesn't show the finished product, or the scene where it's unveiled in front of a crowd which includes people with "wings" from WWII.
