She served for 51 years. Only USS Constitution has served longer in the US Navy. Reply #1. Dec 02 12, 12:14 PM |

My husband served on the USS Forrestal CVN 59. She is being scuttled, turned into an artificial reef. I think that is so shameful. Both of these ships should be made into museums. When I was a child, my dad was stationed in Hawaii. We went to the entrance of Pearl Harbor and saw the Enterprise coming in after the explosion. This would have been in the mid 1960's. Reply #2. It just costs a fortune in upkeep to preserve these ships. Most are sold for scrap or sunk as targets. Reply #3. Dec 02 12, 8:39 PM |

Enterprise is also nuclear. So there are many differences in the decommissioning of this type of ship compared to a conventional one. Reply #4. Dec 03 12, 8:00 AM |

The story that I saw said because of the damage that would be caused to the ship during the removal of the nuclear parts, it would be too costly and inefficient to turn it into a museum. Reply #5. Dec 03 12, 10:25 AM |

I know someone whose told me of an unofficial drag race between the Big E and the Connie. Starting from a cold start the Connie had the Big E in the first quarter mile or so, but then the Big E came on and blew the Connie out of the water. The person who told me this was serving aboard the Connie at the time this happened, which would put it in the early '70s. Reply #6. Apr 22 25, 7:19 PM |
