Yep! Australia Day. The day that a bunch of Limeys walked into a country and took over from the poor uneducated primitive Native population and then promptly peopled it with convicts. Makes you think doesn't it? These days that sort of thing would constitute war. :)

Thanks E.D.!

A quiet day here, with a bit of cricket practice and then flicking between the Oz-India game and some of the tennis.

Read that our PM has awarded Price Phillip an Australian knighthood (Knight of the Order of Australia). Thought this was a joke at first (and in many respects feel it is still a joke). Nothing to do with the recipient, just the whole concept. I much prefer the simple 'Order of Australia', with it's various levels, to recognize extraordinary merit.

Mommakat, I'm right behind you. I've never celebrated Australia Day for just those reasons. I have the Triple J Hottest 100 playing, but that's about as far as I'm going to "celebrate" it.

Rosie Batty named 'Australian of the Year' & she certainly deserves this award. Ms Batty has spent the past year campaigning to have more done to protect women & children from domestic violence after her young son was murdered by his father. Well done, Rosie!

Forgive me for being cynical once again, but primarily the average Aussie who gets the day off will spend it swilling beer and goofing off. I sat on my rose coloured glasses a long time ago and never bothered to get another pair.

Something that always seems to come up every time Australia Day approaches is whether or not we should change our country's flag. Personally, I don't think there's anything wrong with the Australian flag. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

To change it would be an insult to all the men who fought under it in two world wars and gave their lives in the process. It also demonstrates our ties with England where most of our forbears originated and those ties I hope are never severed.

I agree. There's nothing wrong with the design of our flag so it should be left the way it is. Another thing that's being talked about is whether or not Australia should become a republic.

Just seen a story involving a NSW café that's come under fire for a sign erected to advertise their Australia Day opening hours. The sign reads: "Yes, we're open on National Dickhead Day".

Now they'll take some serious flack for that sign, but it is pretty funny!

I sometimes wonder why we celebrate Australia Day. Is it really a day that should be celebrated?

If you knew your history and had any sense of patriotism you would not ask that question ED

I agree, we should definitely celebrate Australia Day and what we've achieved as a nation. Without it becoming a PC-based list of abject apologies, I think there is also room to reflect on what we might/should do better in the future. So celebrate and think!

The reason I asked this question is because Australia Day marks the day that Europeans first arrived in this country. Technically, Australia was invaded by the Europeans. There were already people living here for thousands of years before white people arrived.

Well world history would reveal that this is not the first time another country invaded a primitive land....how about America, South America, New Zealand, the list goes on and on. So that is a rather hollow reason to negate national pride.
