I'm fond of a reliable way to make fire. Fire is handy for both heat and cooking food. It heats water so items can be sterilized & cleaned. Another wonderful use for hot water is bathing. The novelty of ice cold bathing wears off soon.

Probably the compact disc player. It's made it so much easier to listen to music.

I rather say electricity as well. Without it, other greats just don't function. (And I do enjoy my gadgets)

The automobile! Where would we be without it?! Also, the airplane! Great inventions, indeed! :)

Electricity of course must be first as most modern items need it to function. Other than that the Microwave oven, I am sure most housewives would agree.

Sports, the greatest invention. The millions of humans to participate have i believe, reduced aggression and substituted war/battles with peaceful competition among nations/ethnic groups. The many millions of spectators and employees that enjoy their favorite sports has contributed financially ten-fold to the global economy. What greater feeling than participating in an event for your country/city/school, doing your best and winning. Ok, maybe its second to sex.

There are some good ones here but I would like to throw in the integrated circuit. Without it we would have no computers advanced much beyond adding machines, nor any of the electronics based upgrades to classic power appliances which we enjoy today...including computers themselves which are now available in numerous portable forms. It truly has revolutionized the way we live, and done show in a remarkably short period of time.

The spear. I know, I know, extremely low tech, doesn't belong. Except it does because it seems the spear lead to all future inventions. Early man didn't have anything to either protect themselves with or to hunt with. Their having to pick up sticks and stones for this purpose. At some point someone realized that broken sticks with sharp breaks were a little better for this purpose so they began trying to get just the right break. These would have been early spears. Then they discovered that by using rocks with sharp edges they could put the point on a stick rather than hoping to get just the right break. But they couldn't always find these sharp edges rocks so the began making them by trying to break rocks so they could sharpen their spears. The added advantage was these broken stones could be used to cut wood and meat so you start getting knives and axes.

And they realized they could use fire to harden these points a little more than simply cutting them. They would have already realized that fire was good for keeping warm, keeping away wild animals at night, and for cooking, but they would have largely been looking for it to occur naturally. Surely even before the spear they were look to start fire on their own. With the need to harden spear tips they had another reason to be able to start fires. Not to mention charcoaled types might be useful for drawing with. Though they'll eventually discover berries, plants, etc. that prove better drawing and painting mediums for them than simple charcoal on stone.

But someone realized that broken rocks could be attached to the ends of wooden shafts for better spear points. And not only that, but attaching them to the sides of sticks made even better axes.

Someone discovered what becomes the atalatal improves throwing a spear giving better range. And range becomes important so they start playing around, slowly making the spear smaller while attaching string to other sticks with a certain flexibility which results in the bow and arrow.

It doesn't all have to be weapons, but my point is that slowly the spear leads to other discoveries and inventions that eventually lead to where we are today.
