Subject: Fun with Limericks

For the past year or so my team the Scrambled Eggheads have indulged in the lighthearted composition of limericks. One person provides the first line and then other members (first come first served) add one more line until it is complete. The person adding the final line then provides the starter for the next limerick. We thought it might be popular on the FT chat boards.

Anybody not familiar with limericks should note:
"The limerick is well known for its bawdy flare and sexual humor, but beyond that it is a well-structured poem with strict rules of composition"
1.It's a five line poem.
2.Lines 1, 2, & 5 share rhythm and rhyme patterns.
3.Lines 3 & 4 share rhythm and rhyme patterns.
4.Lines 1, 2 and 5 contain 7 to 10 syllables that follow the stress pattern da-DA da-da-DA da-da-DA da.
5.Lines 3 and 4 contain between 5 to 7 syllables each and follow a da-DA da-da-DA da stress pattern.
6.Lines 1, 2 and 5 share an end rhyme.
7.Lines 3 and 4 share an end rhyme.

Here are a few of the most recent ones we've come up with:

Of the Mongols young Genghis was Khan
To create mighty Empire his plan
With looting and pillage
Of blood there was spillage
But beneath it he just loved his Gran

A gardener was bit by a bee
On a spot somewhat North of her knee
It wasn't her nose
Where the bee chose repose
But right where she sits down to pee

As she daintily waltzed on the floor
Resembling the muse Terpsichore
Her eyes were ablaze
Which perhaps was malaise
As she found her dance partner a bore

The kitten awoke in a fright
When something went bump in the night
She hissed and she spat
When she saw the other cat

(Sidebar! This is hilarious, and I do mean in that really good, fun way! It IS like getting stuck in an elevator, mostly because everyone is so anxious to leap in, things get a bit muddled. It's fun to watch. Mira, I can feel your pain, I honestly can. When I haven't slept in far too many hours, nothing makes sense, but you pulled up magnificently! At this hour of night (or day,) I seem to have the place all to myself. Hmmmm... that may be a variation of my next first line.)

I crack nuts, just as a hobby!

... sorry about the weak end line, but there were few rhyming alternatives :(

It's June and the tournament looms
Wimbledon's quite out of rooms
But my friend, Lucy White
Does the cleaning on site,
So I'm sharing her closet with brooms.

A dotty old lady from Nairne
Hid her silver and gems in a cairn
She'd always been taught
To hide things that she'd bought
From the time that she was a wee bairn.

(Sorry to have to finish this one but the available rhymes are very limited. Alternative last line would be

Those lessons are hard to "unlairn.")
