This thread is for the discussion of the Duel Game. Before you post, please bear in mind that, in the past, duel threads have had to be closed or deleted by moderators and administrators due to unpleasant posts and escalating personal disputes between players.
As a result, we ask that you observe the following rules:
- Stay on topic. This thread is for The Duel Game only - no other games.
- Feel free to celebrate your victories and vent about your defeats. However, we ask that you do *not* name or identify your opponent in any specific game. "Dang, I lost 993 to 994 to my personal nemesis again" is acceptable (as the general public would not normally know who your nemesis is), but "That darn Cat People guy defeated me for the third time this week" is not (there are only so many good players in a team) and "How does Joe Bloggs keep scoring 999!" is definitely out of order.
- Congratulations to specific players are allowed, but please do keep it to occasions that really warrant it (such as a player who caught you on your best subject or the one who just turned your hopeful 15-0 into a 14-1) and do not identify the specific game (i.e. if you mention a name, do not mention the category).
- Critique of the game and its features as well as constructive feedback are allowed and appreciated. However, keep it polite and factual.
- The rule of ties being neither wins nor half wins is not up for debate. If you want credit for a win, you need to score at least one point higher than your opponent. Note that a tier path for the "all tied up" badgelet is in the making (if not already out), so you will get something for those ties.
- It's understandable that you are frustrated if you get a reload penalty and you can vent but please direct that anger at whatever caused you to reload. We were forced to introduce the penalty because a small minority of players abused "free" reloads and we are aware that this is occasionally causing an undeserved loss. The way duels and mashes are set up, it is inherently not possible to tell a genuine technical fault from an attempt at gaining an illegal advantage. If you get reload penalties on a fairly frequent basis you may wish to look into your internet connection along the route from your computer to Funtrivia. If it's any consolation, reload penalties happen to everyone sooner or later.
- Personal attacks are strictly prohibited. Do not in any way criticise another poster, try to argue with them, or accuse them of anything.
- The moderators have complete discretion when it comes to deleting posts that violate these rules. Reposting material that has been deleted by a moderator, either in this or another thread, taking a personal dispute with another player from this thread to another, or ignoring a moderator's decisions and/or seeking to undermine or bypass them are not acceptable.
This thread is also subject to the same rules that apply to the Chat boards as a whole. If you are found violating any of the rules, you can expect your posts to disappear without warning and, if the moderators feel it warranted and at their sole discretion, you may find yourself suspended from the chat boards, also without warning (although having some of your posts disappear should clue you in). Suspension from the chat boards can vary in length from a temporary one-week loss of privileges to a permanent loss; if you do not feel comfortable with this rule, do not post on this thread or other Chat boards.

I'd like to express my approval of the Monthly Dueler Badge. My teammate winning this badge last month inspired me to play the duel consistently this month for the first time in a while. Had this thread been open earlier, I would have posted a congratulations to one of my opponents in the last week or two. I don't remember who it was or what category, but I did lose to someone who scored a perfect 1000. I think this was the first time that happened to me, so congratulations to my now nameless opponent. Even when I know all the answers instantly, my fingers can't seem to keep up, so no score of 1000 for me so far. I think my best is 997 or 996 and I'm pretty sure it was on Horror movies. Kudos to the players who manage to hit the 1000 target so often. Reply #4. Jan 19 20, 8:41 AM |

I also lost to a player scoring 1000, Andy, although it was more than a couple of weeks ago. I had scored quite high, at least 997 and maybe 998. Just seeing that 1000 in a Duel took the sting out of losing and I wrote my opponent at the time to congratulate them. Reply #5. Jan 19 20, 11:46 AM |

I am not as bugged by a high scoring loss as I used to be. The ones that annoy me most these days are when I bump a wrong answer when I knew the right one, and lose by less than 50 points. Not a common thing but it does happen. Reply #7. Jan 19 20, 12:09 PM |

Life too short for a trivia game to upset me...much. But two answers for a question that have a minor spelling variation do get me mildly annoyed. It's not the quiz authors fault though. Yes, answerman, those are the ones that bother me most, too - when I could very easily have won, but lose due to some mistake entirely on my own part. ...and new question already submitted and waiting for approval. :-) I think I won all 5 duels this morning, haven't checked. What a nice variety of topics today. "Guitars" for me and a surprisingly good mix of subjects that nobody can accuse of being too biased towards Americans. Let's see......"Canadian Music", "British TV", "Poetry" and "World". I'm hoping my recent trend will continue. My first question has a 30% rating. I know this is due to my answer choices. The answer is a man's name which has two initials. And I used his real last name and different two letter combinations for the other options. Not only is that not very creative, players don't like that very much...including myself. That was at least 9 years ago that I wrote that one and I haven't even tried writing another one until the beginning of this year. My second question was recently seen in the NQG and I just saw that the rating so far is at 70%. I'm happy with that. Yeah, I enjoy seeing the history subcategories show up in Duel, even when I get thumped in them. Yesterday we had Vietnam War and I think U.S. Civil War the day before. As for NASCAR, I've developed a brilliant strategy of selecting either Jeff Gordon or whatever the top answer is. Results have been mixed but I'm calling it a success story anyway. Reply #19. That is similar to my strategy for NASCAR. I never followed it but I lived in "the South" long enough to absorb a fair bit of name recognition by osmosis. The"if an Earnhardt, Petty, Gordon, or Busch is there...jump on it." strategy is usually good for about 500-550 which is just enough more often than not. Reply #20. Jan 22 20, 12:09 PM |
