Subject: News: Forums Down

Please note that due to the critical PHP vulnerability recently discovered, the forums are unavailable at this time - we had to do that to avoid any danger. We are not sure if or when they can be brought up again in their current form. We may need to replace them entirely - the software running them is very old and no longer supported by the creators and the integration into the site, with the double login, is not really intuitive.

If we decide to go that route, we will definitely try to provide a way to migrate any ongoing forum discussions or data that needs to be saved. (Yes, editors and admins have stuff on there too that we'd really like back!)

In the meantime, please use the chatboards for your discussion needs! Sorry for any inconvenience!

And just because the question will be asked: None of the other sections of FunTrivia use PHP, so all core services, including private games and email trivia, will remain up as always. The only affected portion is the forums.

Feel free to discuss, suggest or ask any questions - but please understand that we can't answer "when will I be able to get back to [this thread]" right now. This is a developing situation and we're doing our best.

(Blame Evi. He can't touch our realms, so he just took to something bigger...)

I'm sure this is not the case, but there is the tin-foil hat part of me that immediately thought the 2026 Halloween Challenge is to take the forums back from the kitties and restore them back to normal.

Lol, I also thought it might have something to do with Halloween. Maybe cats have stolen the forum, and we need to track it down. People could gather clues by doing chores, eventually piecing together the link to its hiding spot, and clicking it might magically bring it back. Ha!

Well, most certainly we have managed to make those two kitties hack into the code of PHP and bring down a significant part of the web!

No - this is no Halloween and no joke. There is a major IT security issue right now, affecting websites worldwide, because the problem is in a core software (PHP - a scripting language) used on many servers. A patch should be provided today, but this will only be done for versions still in support.

Older software, like the FT forums, may or may not be upgradeable to the new version of PHP which can receive the patch - unfortunately the specific problem affects versions from many years back to everything before today!

At this time, we followed the recommendation of leading security experts and took down anything that depends on PHP until we can assess and counteract.

Looks like we’ve got sentient AI cats on our paws this time.

I hope if they come back people will use them more! It used to be the heart of the site.
