What a wonderful idea! As much as I love ghosts and ghost stories, it would be fun to try! Thanks, ElusiveDream! Reply #21. Apr 05 15, 8:14 AM |

rockinsteve, apparently, Stephen King had a very interesting time during his stay at the Stanley Hotel and The Shining is the result. I remember reading that Mr. and Mrs. King were the only guests in the hotel as it was about to close for winter. Jim Carrey checked into the same room Mr. and Mrs. King used. Jim checked out in three hours. Apparently, it isn't just 217 that's 'interesting'. Room 401 is more so. I read Ghost Story just after it was published. I still remember it in vivid deal. A good read! Does anyone reread books? Reply #22. Apr 05 15, 8:30 AM |

Yes, I re-read some books I haven't read in a long time. I re-read both The Shining and Ghost Story many years after first reading them. I often gain a new perspective and notice things I missed from my initial reading. Reply #23. Apr 05 15, 3:55 PM |

I do not read much ghost stories as I get little scared while reading horror stories. Reply #24. Jul 12 15, 12:11 AM |

I love "A Christmas Carol," but it's certainly not scary. For sheer scare the you-know- what out of you, two vampire novels are at the top of my list: "They Thirst" by Robert R. McCammon ( coolest title!) "'Salem's Lot" by Stephen King Reply #26. Jul 12 15, 6:11 AM |

Ghost stories aren't necessarily horror stories. Many people seem to think they are. Reply #28. Aug 09 15, 8:50 AM |

I like "The Signalman by Charles Dickens. I think you can still find a video of it on youtube. Reply #29. Jul 10 16, 7:29 AM |

Oh no! The film of "The Signalman" with Denholm Elliot has disappeared from youtube. I can only find audio books on youtube but they won't be as good I'm sure. Reply #30. Jul 10 16, 7:33 AM |

Mixamatosis:I had forgotten all about this thread of mine since not many people bother to post on it so thanks for digging it out! :) I like Velda Johnston. She has written several ghost stories. One of them is called "The People From The Sea". It's not really a scary ghost story, either. I think it's a very good book. Reply #31. Jul 10 16, 2:33 PM |

Do they ever put ghost stories on TV? We used to have a programme called "The Christmas Ghost Story" on TV every Xmas in the UK but I think they may have dropped it now. Winter is just the right time of year to watch or read ghost stories. Reply #32. Jul 14 16, 2:04 PM |

I've read a ton of Clive Barker, and ghosts pop up in many of his stories, mostly in his "Books of Blood". There's also his "Coldheart Canyon". Reply #33. Oct 22 16, 8:10 AM |

Several of Dean Koontz's novels have ghost and/or supernatural elements, and, although they're certainly not great literature, they are generally entertaining. Reply #34. Oct 22 16, 10:19 AM |

I never think of 'A Christmas Carol' as a ghost story per se. It's not scary, and that's why, I guess. Much as I admire Stephen King in his Richard Bach persona and as a human being, I'm never going to read any of his horror stories. I still live alone, still have an active imagination. Actually, just watching the news on TV these days is all the scary stuff I need in my life. Reply #38. Jul 18 23, 7:51 AM |

I hear you, Cymruambyth, about the tv news! How about friendly, even helpful, ghosts for your reading? My first two thoughts were of Topper and possibly The Ghost and Mrs. Muir. I have never read the Topper books by Thorne Smith but have very fond memories of watching the tv series as a child. Reply #39. Jul 18 23, 11:58 AM |

Elusive Dream, have you ever read 'The Lovely Bones' by Alice Sebold? Your ghost story idea is somewhat similar, although the murdered girl in 'The Lovely Bones' is merely a spectator in what happens after her death rather than an active participant in solving the crime.
