Subject: Worst Book Ever

What is the worst book you have ever read?

I have read two- "Silas Marner" (sorry if I'm offending you if you liked it. I thought it was so weird) and that children's book "The Giving Tree". I about cried when I read that one. If you've never heard of it, you're blessed.

Your thoughts??

When I first read them, I hated both Alice in Wonderland and its sequal, Alice through the Looking-Glass. However, they grew on me a bit, though I still don't like them.

My vote for worst book of all time goes to "Mein Kampf" by Adolph Hitler. I coudn't make it through the first chapter before I returned it to the library.

Have tried to read Henry James', "The Turn of the Screw" three times. I read everything and anything and finally figured out that the reason this is the only book I've never finished is that it is not worth finishing. Torture, sheer torture!

Also, cannot recommend anything by James Joyce and/or Ernest Hemingway.

I seriously disliked 'Catcher in the Rye' I just couldn't get into it at all, it was dire.
LOTR, I've never gotten past chapter 2, it just doesn't get my attention enough to be bothered to read the rest.
I once bought a load of "Classics" in a fit of "everyone has read these maybe I should" and I think over half were disappointing. 'To the lighthouse' 'Catcher' 'War and Peace' all went unfinished. There were others but I can't even remember what they were lol

I would say the Harry Potter series is the most disappointing. It is full of changed premises, massive plot holes, inconsistencies and apparently none of it can be understood unless the reader also reads transcripts of several post-book author interviews in which essential plot points are given that never appear in the books, but without which the reader has no hope of truly understanding what the author meant. I have never seen a series in which what the author says she wrote and what she actually wrote were so utterly different as to not even be recognisably the same work. Sloppy, shoddy and overall bad-writing. Count me an EX-fan.

A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens. I know it's a classic but I was on the point of punching someone in the face at the 3rd chapter I was so bored.

Reply 132 kabuggi: I can't believe you don't like Of Mice and Men it is one of the best books ever. The character development of George is the best character development ever. It shows you 2 sides of him, where he's angry with Lennie and where he likes him and the almost come together at the end for a brilliant twist.

Yeah well you must have liked them in the first place to read the series. And to be honest I think that they are the best books I have ever read. Sloppy, shoddy and overall bad writing? Yeah everyone agrees with you, as is obvious by people queing up at midnight to get the new books. No offence, but I think you are a bit outnumbered.

Anyway back to the question, worst book I have ever read was 'The Turn of The Screw' by Henry James. It was pathetic to be honest and it doesn't tell you what actually happened in the end. I was forced to read it at GCSE and it was horrible.

Profiles in Courage by JFK. It was the only book I had for summer reading back in high school I could not read. Most of them I read twice, but I could not get through the first chapter of that one!

I recently attempted to read a book of collected short stories of Edgar Allen Poe, and I could not get into it. It was so boring.

If you want to try again, crazycube, start with 'The Gold Bug', then try 'Hop Frog' and 'The Tell-Tale Heart' - Poe takes a bit of getting used to, but repays work! I'm sure there may be still some in my collection that I haven't read, but those I found very readable.

Though Daniel Dafoe's "Robinson Crusoe" is considered one of the classic works of British Literature I just could not get into this book when I had to read it for one of my college courses. I enjoy reading, which is reflected in my getting a bachelor's degree in English literature; however, I do not agree with whomever decides which books are to be considered classics and especially worthy of our reading attention. Some people may like it; it just was not for me.

Candide would definately have to be the worst book I have ever been forced to read but Siddhartha comes in at a close second. I had to read both for my AP English class.
