Subject: Worst Book Ever

What is the worst book you have ever read?

I have read two- "Silas Marner" (sorry if I'm offending you if you liked it. I thought it was so weird) and that children's book "The Giving Tree". I about cried when I read that one. If you've never heard of it, you're blessed.

Your thoughts??

“A Room with a View” E. M. Forster was one of the most painful must reads of my life. There were a few thrust upon me at University that came close but I never really recovered from that one. Huge LOTR fanatic, you either love it or hate it, like oysters or country music. Matter of taste I suppose.

Hmm. It was this one book that was from a old Nick show where a girl has telekinesis. I forget what it's called. But it was really cheesey and predictable.

And I read The Giving Tree a couple of years ago, it's kinda sad.

I don´t want to hurt someone´s feelings but "Eragon" is not a good book. Good enough for a 16-year-old writer but still far cry from what I call literature. A good high school essay.

Grapes of Wrath is the words book I have ever been forced to read followed by The Giver which makes a mockery of the Science Fiction genre

Probably "The Da Vinci Code" by Dan Brown. It is just so badly written. Aspiring writers should study the very first paragraph as an example of how to impart information in the most ploddingly obvious way. I still don't know how I managed to get to page 2, let alone the end!

I believe it was called Mad Monks on the Road. One of the few books I have never finished and probably the only book I actually threw away instead of donating to charity.

I don't think I've ever read a book that I hated. There were some that made me nauseous, just thinking about people that could do such things; there were some that were boring; there were some that just didn't do much for me. I've never stopped reading a book because it wasn't something that I loved; every author has something to say, even if "I hope you enjoyed putting your feet up." ;)

1) Anything by Mark Twain, because he wrote in dialect (and I hate reading in dialect).

2) Anything by William Faulkner, because he not only writes in dialect but he also writes in stream of consciousness (no punctuation, just writing).

3) Anything by Terry McMillan, because she bashes black men. (Her recent public divorce was poetic justice in my opinion.)

4) The Scarlet Letter, by Nathanial Hawthorne. Deadly dull.

5) Firefox, by Craig Thomas, which wound up being the basis of an equally dull movie starring Clint Eastwood.

6) Lucifer's Hammer, by Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle. Deadly dull AND over 600 pages of small-size type.

Elfriede Jelinek - Greed
I read the German original version when she received the nobel prize for literature a couple of years ago. I must admit, her use of language is, how do I put this, interesting. You can't say it's beautiful, as the topic is simply too disgusting. The whole novel is about sex, or, let me quote from Booklist: "the ubiquitous ugliness of sexual relationships", and I really had to force myself to finish it. It's not that I'm a prude, but the minute details of painful and forced sexual practices she gives in her book, just aren't literature for me.

Anything by Thomas Hardy, I just cannot get into all those pages and pages and pages of turgid prose.

I really found "Crime and Punishment" tough to read and quite boring. I also tried to read "War and Peace" but gave up after like 150 pages. In my opinion, there was too much jumping around in that book. Most books I've read are really great though.

It's telling that so many people are saying their 'worst ever' books were ones they were forced to read for a class. Perhaps that's not the best way to discover the joys of literature.

Anyway, my votes for worst books I've ever read go to: "Should we Tell the President" by Jeffrey Archer, "The Alchemist" by Paolo Coelho and "The Falls" by Ian Rankin.

For worst books I've partially read I'll go for: "Dragons of Autumn Twilight" (Book 1 of "The Dragonlance Chronicles" - I got 1/3 of the way through) and "The Da Vinci Code" (I read the first paragraph and that was enough)

I've tried multiple times. without success, to read "Gravity's Rainbow" by Thomas Pynchon. I've never been able to do it.

Lolita by Nabakov. I don't know why this perversion is considered classic literature.
