Subject: Worst Book Ever

What is the worst book you have ever read?

I have read two- "Silas Marner" (sorry if I'm offending you if you liked it. I thought it was so weird) and that children's book "The Giving Tree". I about cried when I read that one. If you've never heard of it, you're blessed.

Your thoughts??

The Lord of the Rings..
I've been trying these on and off for over 30 years and I still can't get into them.

Maximum Ride: The Final Warning

DESTROYED the series. It was incredibly preachy about global warming, and I don't believe in global warming so it was just terrible. I'm so mad at James Patterson for even writing it. UGH!

I would have to say Twilight. I have no idea what all the hype is about! When I finally gave in and attempted to read it, it was just awful. Maybe it's just because I'm not into teenage vampire romances and the whole hero and damsel in distress concept.

Other than that one, I love books, usually I give everything a chance.

One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. I only made it half way through the book but just didn't get it. I was quite disappointed after hearing so much praise of this book.

Concerning Nabokov's Lolita - I never appreciated or understood this book until I read another book titled Reading Lolita in Tehran by Azar Nafisi. So I definitely recommend Nafisi's book to anyone who wishes to understand Lolita.

Yes, a lot of books we were forced to read in school turn out to be the ones to turn us off, and for me , anything by Shakespeare was pointless, boring, confusing, and nonsense.
However , we also had to read Great Expectations, and , I loved it, just read it again recently, many years later to bring back some memories.
Also had to read Tess of the D'Urbervilles by Thomas Hardy, loved it ! I read it every 5 5o 10 years to re-live the emotions it evokes.

It's hard to pick just one. Sometimes I'll buy a self-published book from a local author at a book-signing, and it turns out to be riddled with typos, grammar and syntax issues, misspellings, and continuity problems.

I have to say 'Hannibal' by Thomas Harris is up there on the list of worst books. I made it about 3/4 way through and threw it at the wall. The movie was actually an improvement.

'Wuthering Heights' was another. I just wanted to smack Cathy a lot.

I quite liked 'Hannibal'... his totally over the top flowery descriptions of Florence were spot on (for example)...

"The Christian martyr San Miniato picked up his severed head from the sand of the Roman amphitheater in Florence and carried it beneath his arm to the mountainside across the river where he lies in his splendid church, tradition says.

Certainly San Miniato's body, erect or not, passed en route along the ancient street where we now stand, the Via de' Bardi. The evening gathers now and the street is empty, the fan pattern of the cobbles shining in a winter drizzle not cold enough to kill the smell of cats. We are among the palaces built six hundred years ago by the merchant princes, the kingmakers and connivers of Renaissance Florence. Within bow-shot across the Arno River are the cruel spikes of the Signoria, where the monk Savonarola was hanged and burned, and that great meat house of hanging Christs, the Uffizi museum."

I quite like that.

Actually, for me it was the Dark Tower series by Stephen King. The 1st one or 2 weren't so bad, but they got steadily worse. I stuck it out to the bitter end, and read every page of every book. I bought the *$#%! things, so by God, I was going to read them! Never again! I'm still a King fan, though.

"The Alchemist" by Paulo Coehlo is probably the top of my list - probably not because it's the absolute worst book ever written, but after all the hype, I thought it was a huge letdown. It never seemed to reach a point.

Madame Bovary. Way back when, but she is just too whiny.

The short story, 'I Only Came to Use the Phone,' by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Well written, but horrifically depressing. A woman's car breaks down so she stops at a mental hospital to use the phone, is mistaken for patient, and trapped there.
