Subject: Worst Book Ever

What is the worst book you have ever read?

I have read two- "Silas Marner" (sorry if I'm offending you if you liked it. I thought it was so weird) and that children's book "The Giving Tree". I about cried when I read that one. If you've never heard of it, you're blessed.

Your thoughts??

I was considering reading the newest Scarpetta novel, but you just cast the deciding vote. I've heard nothing but bad things about it.

I really think Cornwell is going way dowhnill lately.

I am an avid reader and fairly easy to please, but the supposed classic 'Cider With Rosie' by Laurie Lee left me screaming with frustration as it was truly dreadful, and I did try on three occasions to finish it! Boring, boring, boring, stilted language, dismal characters - no flow in story.

Two other classics I tried to finish, but also had to give up were 'Hard Times' and 'Vanity Fair'.

I read the Egypt Game in sixth grade, and I wanted to burn the stupid book when I was finished. I also STRONGLY disliked A View From Saturday, and Kit's Wilderness.

Anything by Danielle Steele, or Sidney Sheldon. In general, giant runaway bestsellers are pretty bad. I don't mind reading trashy books, but some of these bestselling authors are just beyond trash, and into outright garbage. Not one single spark of anything resembling insight, or truth, or beauty, or humour, or any reflection of an authentic human experience, however small. Just droning away at their boring little story in the most phlembatic possible prose.

I have to agree that Lord of the Flies, Animal Farm and also The Discworld series were the most boring books I have ever read.

I simply love "Animal Farm" and "Lord of the Flies." They're the sort of books that make one think, and weirdly enough, I enjoy that.

I read the first page of Moby D*ck and couldn't bear to continue. It just struck me as so boring.

My personal least favourite book is Diana Gabaldon's "Outlander." I read it hoping for a good historical fiction book, since I am very interested in the history of Scotland, specifically the time period in which the book is set. I was greatly disappointed, though, to find that the romantic content greatly outweighed the historical content. At least half the book was romance, which is just ridiculous to my delicate sensibilities. I would encourage anyone and everyone in FunTrivia NOT to read "Outlander," especially if you're a kid or don't want to read romantic content. At the very least, you'd think the book could be better marketed.

Wuthering Heights. It took me 3 years to read it... I kept getting half way through and then getting so bored I had to stop and read something else.

The Iliad by Homer. Okay, it's Homer and a classic and all that, but it's SO overrated! All it is is "Ajax pierced so-and-so above the nipple and it came out the other side". Awful! I finally finished it because I had to for school, but my life isn't any more enriched as a result.

Something Happened By Joseph Heller. It should have been titled Nothing Happened. I guess Catch was a hard act to follow.

Anything by Geoffrey Archer, is terrible, I tried reading something and I burned it so no-one else could discover the horror.

That book is one of my least favorite, Blink. I totally agree with you. I couldn't make it through the book in high school, I can't make it through the book now.

My least favorite book is "Island of the Blue Dolphins" by Scott O'Dell. I picked it up while in my children's literature class because it was reccommended in the back of another book I liked. The book is about a girl who is stranded on an island for years. I felt like it took me years to get through the book.

The dullest books I've ever read have been:
The Grapes Of Wrath and Of Mice and Men both by John Steinbeck. They could be classics and everything but they are BORING!

"Conquest of Constantinople" was agony reading, but I had to for a college course.
"Sleeping With the Enemy" was awful, in my opinion.

Searching for Shona. Nothing exciting, but a decent enough book about a spoiled brat maturing into a normal girl. At least, I thought it was until the end. Utterly, horribly disappointing ending--it flopped when it was just reaching the climax. If the author was going for that effect, I'm even more glad I'll probably never see it again. I don't read 200 page books to be disappointed at the end.

My friend and I were supposed to read "Zorba the Greek" for a college class. It was so boring we couldn't do it. So we got the Cliff's Notes. Still boring, we just didn't get the book. So we rented the movie, thinking we'd at least get the basic plot. We both fell asleep. So it was the worst book ever. (On a side note, we listened intently during the review before the test and both passed, with a B.)
