Subject: Celebrity Deaths ...

Have you ever cried over the death of someone famous? I know I have, silly as it may sound. I'll never forget the day Kurt Cobain died. I heard it on the tv, and just froze and I felt stunned at first. I was shocked and then I cried like a big baby! I am a huge fan of Kurt's, and his music means alot to me, so naturally I was saddened by his death. Also, when George Harrison died, I was pretty torn up. I didn't even know he had been ill, and I loved him so! What celebrity deaths have you cried over? You can list more than one if you would like!

post #133 - "All this information is fine, but is it staying true to the post. Wasn't the original post a question - did you cry over a celebrity death?"

Pauline, I believe this question was directed to talentedone, but if you have noticed, ALL celebrity death news AND comments have been reposted here by JuniorTheJaws. I think it was done to avoid having umpteen new threads started and clogging up the boards. Does it really make a difference?

The first one I cried over was Anna Nicole Smith. Why, I don't know. Then it was Heath Ledger. And Brad Renfro.

Norman Whitfield, who co-wrote a string of Motown classics including "War" and "I Heard It Through the Grapevine," has died. He was 67.

A spokeswoman at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center says Whitfield died there Tuesday. He suffered from complications of diabetes and had recently emerged from a coma, The Detroit Free Press reported.

Whitfield was a longtime Motown producer who during the 1960s and '70s injected rock and psychedelic touches into the label's soul music. Many of his biggest hits were co-written with Barrett Strong, with whom he was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2004.

The two won the Grammy in 1972 for best R&B song for the Temptations' "Papa Was a Rolling Stone." Whitfield won another Grammy in 1976 for best original TV or motion picture score for "Car Wash."

Whitfield also worked as a producer for the Temptations and others.

Many of Whitfield's songs from that era, including Edwin Starr's 1970 "War" and the Temptations' 1970 "Ball of Confusion (That's What the World Is Today)," have a strong political tone.

In a statement, Motown great Smokey Robinson hailed Whitfield as "one of the most prolific songwriters and record producers of our time. He will live forever through his great music."

Among Whitfield's other songs, according to the Songwriters Hall Web site, are "Beauty Is Only Skin Deep," "Cloud Nine" and "Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me)," all hits for the Temptations; and "Too Busy Thinking About My Baby," a 1969 hit for Marvin Gaye.

Just last week, Gaye's version of "I Heard It Through the Grapevine," from 1968, was ranked at No. 65 in Billboard magazine's compilation of the top singles of the past 50 years. It was also a hit for Gladys Knight and the Pips, in 1967.

Too many, too soon. Darn it!

I can't remember ever crying when a celebrity died, although I have been saddened when someone with a great talent dies.

I generally reserve my tears for those who are known to me personally or whose lives have in some way touched mine.

It is sad - I thought he'd go on for ever. He was always the epitome of the man we most enjoyed looking at, until younger people decided their favourites were Brad Pitt and Jude Law. No accounting for tastes. :p

Good for him for playing against his looks, instead of playing up to them; and good for him for so fiercely guarding his marriage and his privacy.

I just heard Paul Newman died. That's so sad. I loved him and Robert Redford in "The Sting." That one's one of my favorites.

I am so sorry Paul Newman has died. Like most of these actors and actresses who have been around since you were little, you feel that you know them and that they will be around forever. He was oh so handsome, a great actor and a loyal husband to Joanne Woodward. He will be sorely missed.

We happened to mention Paul at the gas station. The cashier said he had lunch with Paul when Paul was filming "Cool Hand Luke".

The other cashier, who recently graduated from High School, also remembered some of Paul's movies.

Small world.

It's sad when anyone dies and I'm more accepting when an aged celeb passes away. We'll always have the movies of Jimmy Stewart, Gregory Peck, Paul Newman, etc. thank goodness. I felt incredibly sad when Elvis, John Lennon, Dianna, Michael Hutchence and Heath Ledger died. All totally unexpected and unnecessary.

I enjoy his books a great deal and have the majority of them in our home. I will miss his stories.
