Cox or Granny Smith (which are great to cook with). The first early Discovery apples are great, but taste better straight from the tree. Reply #1. Aug 28 10, 12:36 AM |

A Cox's Orange Pippin, which I think is the best apple ever (sorry, Cym!), or a Laxton Superb grown in my back garden. Yes, they are superb! Raeburns are OK outside the Cox season. Reply #8. Aug 28 10, 5:13 PM |

Lesley, lucky you to have a Cox's Orange Pippin tree in your garden! I don't know why we can't get them here in Canada; we seem to grow every other kind of apple. For some reason, the most popular apple with Canadians is the Macintosh. I don't like them because they're just not crisp or tart enough for me. As for Red or Golden Delicious, they'ree much too sweet. Reply #15. Aug 30 10, 9:13 AM |

Oops no, I haven't got a Cox's tree in my garden (no such luck), just the Laxtons. But I have got a Bramley tree, if that counts? I believe that Cox's need a warm dry climate. Perhaps Canada gets too cold for them? Reply #17. Aug 30 10, 11:31 AM |

Red delicious are my favorite, except sometimes they have tendency to get mushy; then not so much. Granny Smiths are good to cook with. I love apple pie ala mode. Wish I had a piece right now. Reply #18. Mar 19 12, 1:37 PM |

Washington Red Delicious is my favorite, but it has to have a certain texture or I won't eat it! Not a big fan of apples in the first place, so I'm very picky about the ones I will eat! Reply #20. Mar 19 12, 4:29 PM |
