C30, Sinatra does a cover of a Don Gibson song on the second studio album he recorded with the Count Basie Orchestra. But it doesn't really come off as vintage Frank, whereas Gibson's version is in keeping with his own style. The song is I Can't Stop Loving You. Reply #182. Sep 07 18, 1:13 AM |

sectant - I knew it best on a album by Dean Martin ("Blue Blue Day," that is). " I Can't Stop Loving You", that the same song as Ray Charles sung? Traditional song now - "Green Grow the Rushes" Reply #183. Sep 07 18, 1:58 AM |

Yes, the same song. Ray Charles did that kind of thing much better than Sinatra. The thing about Sinatra is amongst the masterpieces there are out and out dogs. Listen to a song he recorded pre Capitol era called Mama Will Bark. Defies description. It was a duet with a lady called Dagmar. Honestly, you won't know whether to laugh or cry, it's that bad. Have to confess now, if there is one singer who manages to grate of my nerves, it's Frank Sinatra! Never could abide his singing. Reply #185. Sep 07 18, 3:11 AM |

Sinatra certainly polarises a lot of people but it's possible they haven't heard enough of his songs. I used to think he was ridiculous but I didn't know enough about him. I heard his much earlier 50's songs by accident when channel surfing on digital radio six years ago and it totally floored me. So I started buying those earlier CD's and now I'm completely hooked. And I've also gotten into other artists like Ella Fitzgerald and Nina Simone and all the tangents running off the Great American Songbook. And to think for so many years all I listened to was heavy metal and rock bands. Reply #189. Sep 07 18, 4:51 AM |

I am sure he was a very talented singer - I merely cannot stand his voice..........and this dislike goes way back to 1961. Reply #190. Sep 07 18, 10:33 AM |

Hey, C30, what happened way back in '61 between you and Ole Blue Eyes? Did you guys get into a fight over a girl, or something? Reply #192. Sep 08 18, 4:02 PM |

Small Blue Thing by Suzanne Vega (Umber, you are incorrigible. If Sinatra was alive today, he'd sue you for libel. Or slander. Or just a hell of a lot of money. He never did like members of the press. And if you're not a member of the press, ignore everything I've just said. Or written. Except the Suzanne Vega title. And if you are a member of the press, ignore it anyway. P.S. What newspaper do or don't you write or not write for? Frank wants to know. Or would have wanted to know.) Reply #193.
