I'll start off by saying I rarely use this perk anymore. Before I had won the Jack of All Trades badge, I had a period there where I used it almost weekly, with mixed results. The last time I used this perk was when I was going for the Diamond (Tier 6) upgrade in Expert Symposium. It worked, and I went on to reach Crown (Tier 7) the next day. The perk, like all perks, resets on Mondays, so if you use it, you cannot use it again until at least the following Monday. When you use the mulligan, your previous score is deleted from the current hour's standings and replaced by the mulligan score. That is true even if your mulligan score is lower than your original score (which has rarely happened to me, so the mulligan is not a "sure thing" as you get different questions on the second pass through the game as compared with the first, and the questions may be harder than the first time.) However, if you happen to have the Difficult Daily Challenge known as the Expert Challenge and use your Expert mulligan that day, while your original score will be deleted and replaced in the current hour's standings, it will *not* be deleted from your list of Expert attempt scores. If you have not already used up your maximum of four Expert game attempts that day, *both* your original score *and* your mulligan score (regardless of whether the mulligan score was better or worse than the original score) will count as attempts. This may confuse your opponent if he/she is not aware of this and especially if your mulligan score not only beats your original score, but also beats your opponent's high score for the day. Your opponent may think they were in the lead, only to look later and see that you beat their score in the same game you had already played in the same hour and wonder how that could have happened. Well, it isn't something new. It's been that way all along. But, as I mentioned before, using the mulligan isn't a "sure thing". If, for example, your mulligan score was lower than your original and you were trailing your opponent in the Expert Challenge, you have now burned *two* of your four attempts without benefit *and* burned your mulligan for the week. There are fine points in when to choose to use the mulligan for optimal impact which I learned years ago when I used it regularly. I have 279 Expert wins now, 163 at Champion Division, and am Tier 7 in Expert Symposium, so I don't feel the need to use the mulligan anymore, but I am certainly willing to comment on it. It's an interesting perk that can be particularly valuable when a player is closing in on a goal for the Expert game (for example, when they have 90+ Expert wins and are pushing for the Jack of All Trades badge, as was the case with me over four years ago.) I love the mulligan. I use it every week. Usually trying to get elusive champions wins. Occasionally to play a really good topic of mine twice to ensure winning the daily challenge that Brian mentions above. If you are lucky enough to get a good topic to do that with then fair play. It does catch people unawares though. Every couple of months or so, someone complains over in the General Boards about someone passing them up in the Expert Challenge by scoring twice in the same game in the same hour. They seem completely oblivious to the fact that they had the mulligan used against them. Maybe they never even heard of the mulligan. In any event, they invariably complain that it's unfair and the FAQ page didn't say this could happen. I find no merit in their complaints. Ignorance is no excuse. It is perfectly fair to use the mulligan for the purposes we have described, as far as I'm concerned, and, frankly, I'm getting tired of continually having to reexplain this same point over and over again in the General Boards, especially as it seems some of the people that bring this up are the same people that brought it up just a few months earlier. It's like "Fifty First Dates" over there in the General Boards sometimes. Reply #3. Jan 11 19, 11:37 PM |

The mulligan is a perk one gets that allows them to replay an Expert game in the same hour that they've already played it (no more than once a week) by going to the perks page, which can be found at www.funtrivia.com/perks.cfm or reached by going to the top of the homepage and finding your username that gives a drop-down menu and looking for "perks" in the menu. There are other perks, as well, which you may be interested in exploring. Reply #7. Jan 23 19, 10:56 PM |
