What's wrong with learning something you knew nothing or little about? If all the quizzes were just concerning familiar subjects, it could become rather dull. Curling and cricket, for example, are two sports I am becoming a fan of quite rapidly. Reply #2. Feb 13 13, 9:46 AM |

For me it is Rugby, Cricket, Lacrosse, ...these are not very popular in the states, but I am trying to learn a little about them. Reply #3. Feb 15 13, 12:06 AM |

13LuckyLady...I agree with you. I also enjoy learning something new and this is the place to do it. It just ruffles my feathers when a USA sport question is thrown in on a topic that it's not related to. Reply #5. Feb 18 13, 3:57 PM |

Postie! I was just kind of looking around at some of these old threads that no one has posted on in years, and here's one that was last posted on by one of my pals! Postie is my pal, everybody! Anyway, four years and a day since you made that last Postie post, there Postie! Can you believe that? Time flies, ay? Reply #8. Feb 19 17, 11:09 PM |

It ruffles my American feathers when soccer is referred to as "football" and football is referred to as "gridiron." I already love football, but I'm starting to like soccer, even though I don't understand it, at all. Suddenly, the match (match? game?) ends, and I have no clue why! And that's just one of the things I don't understand. But, it's a very calming and elegant sport to watch, I think. Reply #9. Feb 21 17, 12:58 AM |

"football", by definition means the ball is kicked with the foot.................in soccer it is, hence football. In American "Football" and Rugby "Football", it frequently is carried, not kicked. Reply #10. Feb 21 17, 1:31 AM |

Blackdress .........a football (oh all right, "soccer" if you prefer) match, is of two halves, each half lasting 45 minutes. The referee indicates when time is up, for both Half and Full Time, irrespective of what is going on in the game.........and that is when the game ends, seemingly abruptly. Reply #11. And do those halves also have clocks that count up, rather than count down? Something funny is going on there, because every time I glance at the clock, it appears time has been added, not subtracted. I'm also not completely sure when a penalty kick is awarded. And doesn't soccer also sometimes have shoot-outs? Much like watching a very long and exciting (ice) hockey game (which we just call plain, old hockey since it's always played on ice,) it's so anticlimactic to watch the winning team determined by a shoot-out. It's exciting at the time, especially if you are attending the game live, but when it's suddenly and abruptly over after it's gone into... maybe two overtimes? The wind just kind of whooshes out of the arena. Reply #12. Feb 21 17, 5:22 AM |

Hey, Ray, what happened to you, brother? Well, I suppose it hasn't been all that long since the last post. Certainly not four years! Ray is my Royal Navy pal, everyone! Well, blackdresss, I wish I could help enlighten you on that stuff, especially since I was the one who resurrected this thread and got all of this started again, but you probably know more about all that than I do. I hardly know the first thing about soccer as it has just simply never interested me, but it does seem to have a clock that winds up and not down, at least it surely does seem like there is some sport out there somewhere that has that kind of clock. I am strictly a football fan. The other sports I watched in years past are all ones that I have just gradually lost interest in over the years. Only football remains for me now. Here's my big issue: why can't soccer be called soccer and football be called football? I mean, let's all examine two key facts. #1: Football is not soccer. #2: Soccer is not football. However, every time I turn around, someone is referring to soccer as "football (soccer)". It's like, 'Yeah, I got tickets to the football (soccer) game the other day so my son and I could watch some football (soccer). He is very excited about football (soccer) as this is the first year that his school has started a football (soccer) program. My son has these lofty aspirations to win a football (soccer) scholarship for college and then go on to play football (soccer) professionally. If it has to be that way, then why can't football be called "soccer (football)"? It's like "Welcome to Monday Night Soccer (football)! Tonight we have a great matchup between the number one offense in pro soccer (football) and the number one defense in pro soccer (football). It kind of leads me to believe that people have some kind of obsession with football. I mean, if soccer is going to be constantly misidentified as "football (soccer)" then why doesn't it go the other way around? Why the eternal one-way street? Reply #13. Feb 23 17, 10:14 AM |

It's my guess that when the game of what we call football over here was invented they would have called it soccer had they known that centuries later it would confuse people overseas when they invented their version. Doubtful though, we Brits can be quite stubborn. Reply #14. Feb 23 17, 12:52 PM |

Hmmm. I always thought it was the Irish who were the stubborn ones. That is something I truly believe more and more as the years go by, as I am of Irish descent and I am indeed extremely stubborn, at least at times. What I CAN'T believe is me just now noticing that someone actually responded to one of my posts. This is an extremely rare event, believe me! That's why it's so easy for me to make a long-winded post and then just float away and forget about it. You have a lot of guts talking to King Wind Bag! Anyway, I am trying to be a little more attentive and not let so much time pass before checking to see if there is some outrageously wild chance that someone has actually responded to one of my posts. It's very easy for me to let time get away from me, as I am all over the place around here. Anyway, I like your spooky avatar. They don't have that one in the lineup anymore and they have also pulled mine out of the lineup as well. I suppose they pull a few out and throw a few in now and then? Well, I suppose I need to shut this down. It's very strange, we have pretty much unlimited space and certainly no one is forced at gunpoint to read a single word of these posts, yet I have still managed to generate complaints on my windy little offerings, probably from people who have personal libraries bigger that my apartment and who are quite passionate about reading! Anyway, nice talking to you, my friend! Reply #15. Mar 12 17, 8:31 AM |

I truly am such a moron. I suppose that "Irish" would still fall under the category of "Brits". My bad! By the way, it may tickle you to know that I idolize more people from England than probably any other country in the world, including my own, possibly. I've never made an official count, but on the English side, we are talking about the guys from Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Def Leppard, Queen, the Beatles, and Led Zeppelin, just to barely get started! sadwings, you crack me up! And while you are idolizing, dear God, don't forget the Stones! C30, thank you so much for your explanation of the rules of "futbol." I'm still confused, but thank you for trying! Sadwings, do you know that as a Gold Member, you can find or create your very own avatar(s) and don't just have to use the ones provided by the site? Yeah, the Stones are cool! Legendary dudes all the way, man! Did you ever see that one Saturday Night Live where Mick was hosting and he did that skit with Mike Meyers where Mike was imitating Mick? That was the coolest! Yeah, I've seen that thingy you click on to make your own avatar, but I have never clicked on it yet. I guess I should check it out sometime. By the way, you have forgotten my name, haven't you, girlfriend! My girlfriend in the black dress forgot my name, everybody! :-( I'm just clowning around with you, yo! I haven't forgotten yours, Blackdresss, I'm just not sure how you feel about me revealing it in front of all these maniacs around here. Hee hee! You maniacs stop being like that!
