I think my favorite books-to-movie include "The Hunt for Red October", "The Glass Inferno" (one of two novels upon which "The Towering Inferno" is based), "Jurassic Park", and "The Andromeda Strain" (the original movie with Arthur Hill, not the made-for-TV remake). Reply #1. Jun 02 09, 7:10 PM |

I have always thought that the best Stephen King books or short stories made into movies were - The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile and The Mist - which of course were all directed by Frank Darabont. The rest of Stephen King's books-to-movies were not so well done. Frank Darabont just seems to stick faithfully to the books when he is adapting for the screen but also manages to add his own bit of magic. When I saw these three movies, they all managed to look as I had imagined them in my mind when I read the books which is always a pleasant surprise. Reply #4. Jul 24 09, 11:10 PM |

Pride and Prejudice, but I liked the series more than the movie. Reply #6. Jul 27 09, 6:47 PM |

I'm usually disappointed with movies made from books that I have enjoyed. The worst of these was 'How Green was My Valley', and the Disney travesties of 'Winnie the Pooh', 'Alice in Wonderland', and 'Peter Pan'. I enjoyed 'Sense and Sensibility' which was quite faithful to the Austen original and the BBC-TV version of 'Pride and Prejudice' starring Colin Firth, and Kenneth Branagh's movie version of 'Much Ado About Nothing' is the best transfer of Shakespeare from stage to screen. There are very few books that translate well onto the silver screen. Usually Hollywood messes them up and changes the endings or leaves out important plot points. However, I think generally they did a good job with the Narnia Chronicles and the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Reply #9. Aug 19 09, 12:13 PM |

Always thought The Color Purple was great on-screen, though toning down the story in parts as originally portrayed in the book. Reply #10. Aug 20 09, 6:20 PM |

I agree with neety3264 regarding Stephen King's best translations from book to movie. My least favorite King book to movie was Tommyknockers and The Lawnmower Man (that was a complete joke). Also least favorite was I, Robot(yikes, only vaguely resembling the stories). I like the Harry Potter series and the Lord of the Rings. An upcoming book to movie is the Foundation series. I'm not sure how that's going to work, but I'll find out :-) Reply #11. Aug 20 09, 7:47 PM |

I get really annoyed when makers of movies or TV series take one of my favourite books and MESS IT UP ! A recent example is the Miss Marple series recently shown on ABC TV (Australia) where some idiot had dragged Miss Marple into stories where Miss Christie never intended her to be ! If it's good enough to make into a movie, do it properly ! One that was done really well was Ruth Park's book "Playing Beatie Bow" which was made into a movie in the 80's, and is still one of my favourite movies. Reply #12. Aug 24 09, 9:16 PM |

Tezza, I'm with you on the BBC louse-up of Agatha Christie stories. The worst one was 'By the Pricking of My Thumbs', which was a real dog's breakfast. The other BBC series that messes with reality is 'The Tudors'. It's dreadful and the writers, director, cast and crew should be subjected to the rack and charged with treason! Reply #13.
